The ink-jet printing humidity sorption sensor—modelling, design, technology and characterization

Jerzy Weremczuk; Grzegorz Tarapata; Ryszard Jachowicz

This paper presents a humidity sorption sensor made with an ink-jet printing technique. Nafion was applied as a humidity sorption material. After the presentation of sensor construction and sensor fabrication technology, a lot of effort has been made for detailed sensor tests and characterization. The sensor model based on a RC transmission line with distributed parameters (Jachowicz and Senturia 1981/1982 Sensors Actuators 2 171–86) has been carefully described and validated by a comparison with the sensor empirical parameters, measured in a broad range of measurement frequencies. On the basis of achieved results, some general conclusions for humidity sorption sensors on both the sensor fabrication technology and the sensor modelling have been made and presented in this paper.

Sub-cooled water detection in silicon dew point hygrometer

Ryszard Jachowicz; Jerzy Weremczuk

Abstract A new type of silicon dew point detector is presented in this paper. The fabricated detector structures contain a thermometer, two heaters, a capacitive interdigitated sensor for the detection of water, sub-cooled water, as well as ice. The test results of sub-cooled water recognition are carefully described. The theoretical model of the capacitive interdigitated sensor describing the principle of detection is also discussed.

A non-contact passive electromagnetic transmitter to any capacitive sensor : design, theory, and model tests

Ryszard Jachowicz; G. Wójtowicz; Jerzy Weremczuk

Abstract This paper presents a non-contact passive electromagnetic interface especially dedicated to capacitive sensors. In contrast to radio transmitters cooperating with remote sensors, our interface is extremely simple and requires integration only for the single plane coil with the capacitive semiconductor sensor structure. The interface structure and theoretical calculations done with the use of the Grover method are discussed in the paper. Presented data from interface tests proved that the interface can successfully operate with the frequency of some 11 MHz obtaining sensitivity of some 15 Ω/pF in the range of 0–22 pF.

A MEMS-based super fast dew point hygrometer—construction and medical applications

Ryszard Jachowicz; Jerzy Weremczuk; Daniel Paczesny; Grzegorz Tarapata

The paper shows how MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) technology and a modified principle of fast temperature control (by heat injection instead of careful control of cooling) can considerably improve the dynamic parameters of dew point hygrometers. Some aspects of MEMS-type integrated sensor construction and technology, whole measurement system design, the control algorithm to run the system as well as empirical dynamic parameters from the tests are discussed too. The hygrometer can easily obtain five to six measurements per second with an uncertainty of less than 0.3 K. The meter range is between ?10 ?C and 40 ?C dew point. In the second part of the paper (section 2), two different successful applications in medicine based on fast humidity measurements have been discussed. Some specific constructions of these super fast dew point hygrometers based on a MEMS sensor as well as limited empirical results from clinical tests have been reported too.

Smart sensors interface for wireless data and power transmission

Jerzy Weremczuk; Krzysztof Płotczyk; Grzegorz Tarapata; Ryszard Jachowicz; Xue Chuan Shan; Chee Wai Patrick Shi; Hon Tat Hui

The paper presents the interface designed for wireless data and power transmission. The interface operation idea was tested using build up hardware and software. The sample construction of the temperature sensor embedded with this type interface was designed. Measurements show that the sensor can be wirelessly supplied with energy and is capable to sent data (temperature readings) in 5 cm distance. The interface is universal and can be used after some modifications with any type of sensors.

Optical method of sub-cooled water recognition in dew point hygrometer

Jerzy Weremczuk

A new optical method of sub-cooled water recognition in dew point hygrometer is presented. The physical phenomenon of sub-cooled water and its influence on the hygrometer accuracy is described. A hypothesis relating scattering of light by water and ice layers is proposed. A new type of dew point hygrometer based on the silicone mirror with the embedded capacitive detector and multi-section optical detector is presented. Measurement data obtained from the experimental hygrometer are provided.

The Dynamic Measurements of Absolute Humidity in Nasal Cavity During Respiration

Daniel Paczesny; Jerzy Weremczuk; Ryszard Jachowicz; Piotr Rapiejko; Dariusz Jurkiewicz

The medicine still requires new, more advanced tools for better human body diagnoses. The great developments in electronics let to construct more and more sophisticated instruments. The system described in the paper lets to check functionality of one of human body subsystems - the breathing system. It can measure dynamic changes of temperature and dew point temperature (absolute value of humidity) of inspired and expired air in different places of human nose and throat. Some example results of dew point hygrometer and temperature measurements during respiration are presented. New factors describing condition and capability of human breathing system are. described.

Fast dew-point hygrometer for laryngology applications

Ryszard Jachowicz; Jerzy Weremczuk; Daniel Paczesny; P. Rapiejko

A new fast semiconductor dew point hygrometer for laryngological applications is presented in the report. The hygrometer construction based on integration into the single semiconductor sensor structure the impedance dew detector, the thermoresistor and the heater is described in the paper. The experimental results of the dew point hygrometer tests in laryngological measurements (during patient respiration cycle) are shown and discussed.

Autocalibration of Dew Point Hygrometer Based on Integrated Semiconductor Detector

Daniel Paczesny; Grzegorz Tarapata; Jerzy Weremczuk; Ryszard Jachowicz

The autocalibration procedure of the fast dew point hygrometer based on integrated semiconductor dew detector is presented in the paper. Proposed method is based on detector threshold level setting at 98% of difference between maximal impedance (dry detector) and minimal impedance (fully wet detector). The threshold value was set experimentally by analyzing of detector impedance characteristic in the region close to dew point. Tests of the device proved efficiency of proposed method.

Computer Simulation of Routing Protocols for Wireless, Low Power Sensors Network

Tomasz Paczesny; Daniel Paczesny; Jerzy Weremczuk; Ryszard Jachowicz

In the paper, specification of computer network simulator is presented. This application is designed for tests of different types of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). In particular the simulator concentrates on routing protocols simulation including energy consumption model which is needed in development of ad-hoc networks. Ad-hoc networks consist of mobile nodes, which organize themselves dynamically without any centralized administration. Nodes in ad-hoc network can route packets extenting range of data transmission, therefore routing protocol is needed. WSN applications will likely use ad-hoc model as it is very suitable in measurement and control systems. Effective protocols, especially in energy conserving manner, must be developed to be used in those applications. Described simulator is designed to stand as a useful tool for such studies.
