Description of four new species of the genus Ampelisca (Amphipoda, Ampeliscidae) from the northeastern and southeastern coasts of Brazil and designation of a neotype for Ampelisca soleata Oliveira, 1954

Jesser F. Souza-Filho; Ana Maria T. Souza; M. T. Valério-Berardo

The present study raises the number of Ampelisca species recorded from the Brazilian coast from 18 to 21. The amphipod fauna of the Brazilian northeast coast is hardly known compared to that of the southeast coast. In this study, we describe three new species from the northeast coast: Ampelisca pseudobicarinata sp. nov., Ampelisca rocasensis sp. nov. and Ampelisca cristianae sp. nov, recorded previously as Ampelisca aff. lobata (Serejo et al. 2000). We also report a new record of Ampelisca burkei Barnard and Thomas, 1989. From the southeast coast a new species Ampelisca angraensis sp. nov. is described. An obscure species, Ampelisca soleata, which is very similar to Ampelisca brevisimulata, is herein redescribed and a neotype is designated. An updated key with all species of Ampelisca recorded from the Brazilian coast and comments on geographic distribution are given.

New genera and species of Urothoidae (Amphipoda) from the Brazilian deep sea, with the re-assignment of Pseudurothoe and Urothopsis to Phoxocephalopsidae

Daniela J.P. Sittrop; Cristiana S. Serejo; Jesser F. Souza-Filho; André R. Senna

Box-corer samples taken between 700 and 2000 m depth on the slope of the Campos Basin, southeastern Brazilian deep sea, provided the material for the description of two new genera in the family Urothoidae, Carangolioides gen. nov. and Coronaurothoe gen. nov., and three new species: Carangolioides castellatus sp. nov., Carangolioides hamatus sp. nov. and Coronaurothoe rotunda sp. nov. Carangolioides gen. nov. differs from other urothoid genera by the presence of a distolateral projection on the outer lobes of the lower lip and the distally truncated margin of the upper lip, while Coronaurothoe gen. nov. differs by the mandibular molar being triturative with a distal crown of stout setae. In this study, we provide detailed descriptions and illustrations of the new taxa. An identification key to genera of Urothoidae is also provided. The genera Pseudurothoe Ledoyer, 1986 and Urothopsis Ledoyer, 1967 are removed in this paper from Urothoidae to Phoxocephalopsidae. http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:18863639-4F10-4E25-9C62-8B1047538046

First record of the family Cheidae (Amphipoda, Gammaridea) from the Brazilian coast, with description of two new genera and new species

Jesser F. Souza-Filho

Two new genera of the family Cheidae, previously monotypic, are herein described from Brazilian waters; these represent the first record of this family to Brazil. The first genus, Ruffosius gen. nov., is described based on the new species, R. fluminensis sp. nov., from Rio de Janeiro, and is mainly characterized by the uniramous uropod 2. The second genus, Microcheus gen. nov., also corresponds to a new species, M. nortoni sp. nov., and is distinguished from the other genera by the 2-articulate palp of maxilla 1. The latter is described based on material collected from Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina States. This study provides full descriptions of these two new genera and species and an identification key for species of the family Cheidae.

A new species of Cheiriphotis (Amphipoda, Corophiidae) from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean

Jesser F. Souza-Filho; Ana Maria T. Souza; Maria Teresa Valério-Berardo

A new species, Cheiriphotis petronioi sp. nov., is described from the Brazilian coast. This species is recognizable amongst its congeners by the carpus of adult male gnathopod 2 not fused with propodus and the palm acute and uropod 1 of adult males without a group of apical setae between rami. Specimens studied herein were collected between 23o and 34oS (Brazil - Sao Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul) from 16 to 38 m depth. An updated key to all species of the genus is provided.

A new species of Pseudharpinia (Amphipoda: Haustorioidea: Phoxocephalidae) from Southeastern Brazilian continental shelf

André R. Senna; Jesser F. Souza-Filho

A new species of the amphipod family Phoxocephalidae Sars, 1895, Pseudharpinia tupinamba sp. nov., is described from southeastern Brazilian continental shelf. The new species is closely related to the type-species of the genus, P. dentata Schellenberg, 1931 described from Magellan Province, and was misidentified as the latter species by some authors in the past. Pseudharpinia tupinamba sp. nov. differs from P. dentata by the number of articles in the accessory flagellum of antenna 1, ratio of length and width of the propodus of pereopod 6, size of the posteroventral lobe of the basis of pereopod 7, presence of slender setae in posterior margin of epimeral plate 3, presence of a corona of cuticular spines in dorsodistal margin of peduncle of uropod 2, ratio of length of the inner ramus and the first article of outer ramus of uropod 3, ratio of length and width of the telson, and presence of slender setae on the lateral margins of telson. The new described species is the unique of this genus known from the Brazilian continental shelf.

Two new species of the family Photidae (Amphipoda: Corophiidea: Photoidea) from Brazilian waters, with description of Rocasphotis gen. nov.

Jesser F. Souza-Filho; Cristiana S. Serejo

A new species, Photis sarae sp. nov., is herein described from Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro. The new species is similar to the Hawaiian species, Photis hawaiensis Barnard, 1955, and an undescribed species, Photis sp. F (LeCroy 2000), from Biscayne Bay, Florida. Photis sarae sp. nov. can be distinguished from both species in having gnathopod 2 basis with two long setae on posterior margin, palm with only one spine (excluding palmar corner), pereopod 3 anterior margin of merus with long plumose and simple setae, and dactyli of pereopods 5–7 with accessory spine and telson trapezoidal with distal margin concave. Also, Rocasphotis gen. nov. is described based on material collected from Atol das Rocas, which is closely related to the genus Photis and also corresponds to a new species. Rocasphotis gen. nov. mainly differs from Photis in having antenna 1 shorter than antenna 2, peduncular article 1 longer than article 3, accessory flagellum absent, coxae 1–4 with sparse slender setae; lateral cephalic lobe weakly extended and acute distally; eyes large, poorly developed, composed of sparse ommatidia, and partly enclosed in the lobe. A key for all genera of the family Photidae is given.

A new species of Stephonyx (Amphipoda, Amphilochida, Lysianassoidea) from Brazil

Rayane Sorrentino; Jesser F. Souza-Filho; André R. Senna

A new species of Stephonyx Lowry and Stoddart, 1989 from northeastern Brazil is described, the second record of the genus from Brazil. The new Brazilian species is morphologically close to the type species of the genus. In this paper we compare the different descriptions of Stephonyx biscayensis (Chevreux, 1908) and recommend the necessity of a revision, since some described species may or may not be S. biscayensis.

New Records of Two Deep-Sea Crabs of the Family Lithodidae Samouelle, 1819 (Crustacea: Decapoda) in the Southwestern Atlantic

Flavio de Almeida Alves-Júnior; Julianna de Lemos Santana; Marina de Sá Leitão Câmara de Araújo; Ana Maria Siqueira Quirino; Jesser F. Souza-Filho

Species in the family Lithodidae Samouelle, 1819 are benthic and occurring mostly on muddy substrates of continental and insular slopes in cold waters worldwide. The 28 lithodid species presently recorded from the Atlantic Ocean: seven species of Lithodes Latreille, 1806, five of Neolithodes A. Milne-Edwards and Bouvier, 1894 and 16 of Paralomis White, 1856. Four species are occuring off Brazil, Lithodes manningi Macpherson, 1988 and Lithodes confundens Macpherson, 1988 are the only two species of the genus reported from Brazilian waters, between the states of Bahia and Santa Catarina, while Neolithodes only has two species recorded from Brazil, Neolithodes agassizii (Smith, 1882) from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro, and N. aff. Asperrimus Barnard, 1947 from the state of Santa Catarina. Here we report Lithodes manningi Macpherson, 1988 and Neolithodes agassizii (Smith, 1882) from the Potiguar Basin off northeastern Brazil.
