Flow-shop scheduling with a learning effect

Ji-Bo Wang; Z.-Q. Xia

The paper is devoted to some flow-shop scheduling problems with a learning effect. The objective is to minimize one of the two regular performance criteria, namely, makespan and total flowtime. A heuristic algorithm with worst-case bound m for each criteria is given, where m is the number of machines. Furthermore, a polynomial algorithm is proposed for both of the special cases: identical processing time on each machine and an increasing series of dominating machines. An example is also constructed to show that the classical Johnsons rule is not the optimal solution for the two-machine flow-shop scheduling to minimize makespan with a learning effect. Some extensions of the problem are also shown.

A note on scheduling problems with learning effect and deteriorating jobs

Ji-Bo Wang

In this note, we consider the machine scheduling problems with the effects of deterioration and learning. In this model, job processing times are defined by functions of their starting times and positions in the sequence. The scheduling objectives are makespan (weighted) sum of completion times and maximum lateness. It is shown that even with the introduction of deterioration and learning effect to job processing times, several single machine problems and several flow shop problems remain polynomially solvable, respectively.

Single-machine scheduling with deteriorating jobs under a series-parallel graph constraint

Ji-Bo Wang; C.T. Ng; T.C.E. Cheng

This paper considers single-machine scheduling problems with deteriorating jobs, i.e., jobs whose processing times are an increasing function of their starting times. In addition, the jobs are related by a series-parallel graph. It is shown that for the general linear problem to minimize the makespan, polynomial algorithms exist. It is also shown that for the proportional linear problem of minimization of the total weighted completion time, polynomial algorithms exist, too.

Single machine scheduling with a time-dependent learning effect and deteriorating jobs

Ji-Bo Wang

The paper deals with the single machine scheduling problems with a time-dependent learning effect and deteriorating jobs. By the effects of time-dependent learning and deterioration, we mean that the processing time of a job is defined by function of its starting time and total normal processing time of jobs in front of it in the sequence. It is shown that even with the introduction of a time-dependent learning effect and deteriorating jobs to job processing times, the single machine makespan minimization problem remain polynomially solvable. But for the total completion time minimization problem, the classical shortest processing time first rule or largest processing time first rule cannot give an optimal solution.

Single-machine scheduling with nonlinear deterioration

Ji-Bo Wang; Ming-Zheng Wang

In this paper, we consider the single-machine scheduling problems with nonlinear deterioration. By the nonlinear deterioration effect, we mean that the processing times of jobs are nonlinear functions of their starting times. We show that even with the introduction of nonlinear deterioration to job processing times, single machine makespan minimization problem remains polynomially solvable. We also show that an optimal schedule of the total completion time minimization problem is V-shaped with respect to job normal processing times. A heuristic algorithm utilizing the V-shaped property is proposed, and computational experiments show that it performs effectively and efficiently in obtaining near-optimal solutions.

Single-machine group scheduling with both learning effects and deteriorating jobs

Xue Huang; Ming-Zheng Wang; Ji-Bo Wang

In the paper two resource constrained single-machine group scheduling problems with both learning effects and deteriorating jobs are considered. By learning effects, deteriorating jobs and group technology assumption, we mean that the processing time of a job is defined by the function of its starting time and position in the group, and the group setup times of a group is a positive strictly decreasing continuous function of the amount of consumed resource. We present polynomial solutions for the makespan minimization problem under the constraint that the total resource consumption does not exceed a given limit, and the total resource consumption minimization problem under the constraint that the makespan does not exceed a given limit, respectively.

Single machine total completion time minimization scheduling with a time-dependent learning effect and deteriorating jobs

Ji-Bo Wang; Ming-Zheng Wang; Ping Ji

In this article, we consider a single machine scheduling problem with a time-dependent learning effect and deteriorating jobs. By the effects of time-dependent learning and deterioration, we mean that the job processing time is defined by a function of its starting time and total normal processing time of jobs in front of it in the sequence. The objective is to determine an optimal schedule so as to minimize the total completion time. This problem remains open for the case of −1u2009<u2009au2009<u20090, where a denotes the learning index; we show that an optimal schedule of the problem is V-shaped with respect to job normal processing times. Three heuristic algorithms utilising the V-shaped property are proposed, and computational experiments show that the last heuristic algorithm performs effectively and efficiently in obtaining near-optimal solutions.

Flow shop scheduling problems with deteriorating jobs under dominating machines

Ji-Bo Wang; Z.-Q. Xia

This paper considers the general, no-wait and no-idle flow shop scheduling problems with deteriorating jobs. By a deteriorating job we mean that the processing time is an increasing function of its execution starting time. A linear deterioration function is assumed and some dominating relationships between machines can be satisfied. It is shown that for the problems to minimize the makespan or the weighted sum of completion time, polynomial algorithms still exist, although these problems are more complicated than the classical ones. When the objective is to minimize the maximum lateness, the solutions of a classical version may not hold.

Worst-case analysis for flow shop scheduling problems with an exponential learning effect

Ji-Bo Wang; M. Z. Wang

A real industrial production phenomenon, referred to as learning effects, has drawn increasing attention. However, most research on this issue considers only single machine problems. Motivated by this limitation, this paper considers flow shop scheduling problems with an exponential learning effect. By the exponential learning effect, we mean that the processing time of a job is defined by an exponent function of its position in a processing permutation. The objective is to minimize one of the four regular performance criteria, namely, the total completion time, the total weighted completion time, the discounted total weighted completion time, and the sum of the quadratic job completion times. We present heuristic algorithms by using the optimal permutations for the corresponding single-machine scheduling problems. We also analyse the worst-case bound of our heuristic algorithms.

Minimizing makespan in three-machine flow shops with deteriorating jobs

Ji-Bo Wang; Ming-Zheng Wang

In this paper, a three-machine permutation flow shop scheduling problem with time-dependent processing times is considered. By the time-dependent processing times we mean that the jobs processing time is an increasing function of its starting time. The objective is to find a sequence that minimizes the makespan. This problem is well known to be NP-hard. Several dominance properties and a lower bound are derived to speed up the elimination process of a branch-and-bound algorithm. Moreover, two heuristic algorithms are proposed to overcome the inefficiency of the branch-and-bound algorithm. Computational experiments on randomly generated problems are conducted to evaluate the branch-and-bound algorithm and heuristic algorithm. Computational results show that the proposed heuristic algorithm M-NEH perform effectively and efficiently.
