Four cobalt(II) coordination polymers, [Co2(oba)2(1,2-bix)2]n (1), [Co(oba)(1,3-bix)]n (2), {[Co4(oba)4(1,4-bix)4]·6H2O}n (3), and {[Co6(oba)6(1,4-bix)6]·2H2oba·3DMF·11H2O}n (4), where H2oba = 4,4′-oxybis(benzoic acid), DMF = N,N-Dimethyl formamide, and 1,n-bix = 1,n-bis(imidazol-l-yl-methyl)benzene (n = 2, 3, 4), have been synthesized. These compounds were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Compound 1 exhibits a 2-D nano square grid (4,4) network, while 2 features a 2-D structure with two distinct left- and right-handed helical chains. Compound 3 possesses a doubly interpenetrated double-layered framework structure. The structure of 4 is comprised of 1-D chains of rings. The structural differences reveal that the flexible dicarboxylate and neutral bis(imidazole) are effective building blocks in constructing coordination polymers with diverse architectures.

Lanthanum(III) and europium(III) complexes of 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) with 5-nitroisophthalate, [La(phen)(HNip)(Nip)] n (1) and [Eu(phen)(HNip)(Nip)] n (2), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectroscopy and studied by X-ray crystallography. The single crystal X-ray analyses show that both lanthanum(III) and europium(III) are coordinated by two nitrogens of phen and six oxygens from “Nip2−” and “HNip−”, resulting in a distorted square antiprism.

The reactions of 2-sulfoterephthalic acid (H3stp) with silver nitrate in the presence of 2-aminopyrimidine (apym) or 2-amino-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine (dapym) generated two 2-D coordination polymers {[Ag3(stp)(apym)3]·2H2O}n (1) and {[Ag2(Hstp)(dapym)2 (H2O)]·H2O}n (2). The complexes have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, physico-chemical, and spectroscopic methods. Both complexes have a 2-D layer structure with infinite 1-D chains linked by stp3− ligands and hydrogen bonds. The luminescent properties of the complexes were investigated.

Two new 2D Pb2(μ-4,4′-bipy)(μ-2-sb)2 coordination polymers, [Pb2(μ-4,4′-bipy)(μ-2-sb)2(DMF)] n (1) and {[Pb2(μ-4,4′-bipy)(μ-2-sb)2(H2O)2] · H2O} n (2), have been synthesized, characterized and studied by X-ray crystallography. The structural studies show the Pb atoms to have seven- and eight-coordinate holodirected geometries.

3D LaIII and 2D CuII coordination polymers with 5-nitroisophthalate anions, [La2(μ-Nip)(μ-SO4)2(H2O)5] n (1) and {[Cu3(μ-OH)2(μ-Nip)2(μ-H2O)2] · 2H2O} n (2), have been synthesized, characterized and studied by X-ray crystallography. The La atoms have eight–coordinate geometries in distorted square antiprism environments and the Cu atoms have five- and six–coordinate geometries with distorted square pyramidal and octahedral environments. Self-assembly of these compounds in the solid state occurs through coordination and hydrogen bonding.

Two new nano-dimensional square grid metal–organic polymers, {[Cd(1,3-bix)2(H2O)2](NO3)2} n (1) and [Cd(1,3-bix)2(NO3)2] n (2) (1,3–bix = 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-yl-methyl)benzene), have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and FT-IR spectroscopy. Polymers 1 and 2 are 2-D layer structures consisting of nano-dimensional square grid units. The photoluminescent properties of 1 and 2 were investigated.

In the title compound, [CuCl(C12H8N2)2](C7H5O5S)·H2O, copper(II) is coordinated by four N atoms and one chloride anion in a distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. The Cu—N bond lengths are in the range 1.992 (3)–2.121 (3) A, while the Cu—Cl distance is 2.3046 (11) A.

In the title compound, {[Ni(C14H8O5)(C12H8N2)]·0.25H2O}n, the Ni atom displays a distorted octahedral geometry defined by four carboxy O atoms from two 4,4′-oxydibenzoate (oba) dianions and two N atoms from a 1,10-phenanthroline molecule. The V-shaped oba anion acts as a bridge between two Ni atoms in a tris-bidentate coordination mode, forming a zigzag coordination polymer.
