Enabling Data Offload and Proximity Services Using Device to Device Communication over Licensed Cellular Spectrum with Infrastructure Control

Subramanian Vasudevan; Kathiravetpillai Sivanesan; Satish Kanugovi; Jialin Zou

The viability of device to device (D2D) communication on uplink resources [1] as also the benefits accruing from network control over such communication, on licensed spectrum [2], are quite well understood today. We investigate the merits of a particular system instantiation based on these two tenets. The challenge of scheduling communication between two devices using remote schedulers at one or more base stations is addressed with minimal changes to the current signaling mechanisms in a 3GPP LTE based framework. This system maintains as tight a control over device to device communication as is currently maintained over device to infrastructure communication. Furthermore the benefits of such a system range from optimized routing and resource allocation to metered charging for data exchanged on the D2D link to lawful intercept to dynamic local broadcast. We also provide a comparison of this system with the available option of D2D communications over unlicensed spectrum using Wi-Fi.

Wireless packet data services are poised to be a major growth area, as wireless voice services have reached a fair level of maturity. An effort by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) standards body to continue to develop the successful data-optimized 1x EV-DO high rate packet data (HRPD) 3G system is under way. Alcatel-Lucent along with partners is proposing several novel techniques beyond the state of the art. Some of the key technologies are orthogonal frequency code division multiple access (OFCDMA), multi-carrier as well as wideband transmission, both frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD) modes, multiple antenna techniques such as space division multiple access (SDMA) and multiple input multiple output (MIMO), interference mitigation techniques, and frequency domain interference cancellation. These are described in detail along with the resulting benefits. The design goals are to provide flexibility, backward compatibility (both loose and strict), a boost in the spectral efficiency and peak rates, a reduction in latency for real-time services, and a reduction in complexity in the base stations (BS) and mobile stations (MS). In this paper, we describe the underlying design philosophy and the associated technologies of 1x EV-DO Revision C with a focus on Alcatel-Lucents contribution and provide associated performance results. The standard is expected to be completed in 2Q 2007.

Quality of service support in 1x EV-DO Revision A systems

Pi-Chun Chen; Ren Da; Chris Mooney; Yang Yang; Qinqing Zhang; Lily H. Zhu; Jialin Zou

Quality of service (QoS) support in wireless data networks becomes ever more imperative in the face of rapid introduction of multimedia services into the wireless domain. In this paper, we discuss the limitations of supporting end-to-end QoS applications in the current 1x EV-DO Release 0 system. We give an overview of the newly developed CDMA2000∗ standards framework that allows flow-based QoS authorization, negotiation, admission, enforcement, and accounting for 1x EV-DO Revision A systems. We investigate key QoS techniques, with an emphasis on air interface scheduling, media access control, call/flow admission, overload control, and flow classification. A video telephony (VT) application is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of these techniques. Finally, we highlight several advancements of 1x EV-DO QoS development directions.
