In this paper, we present novel histogram adjustment methods for displaying high dynamic range image. We first present a global histogram adjustment based tone mapping operator, which well reproduces global contrast for high dynamic range images. We then segment images and carry out adaptive contrast adjustment using our global tone mapping operator in the local regions to reproduce local contrast and ensure better quality. We demonstrate that our methods are fast, easy to use and a fixed set of parameter values produce good results for a wide variety of images.

We present a fast, effective and flexible tone reproduction method that preserves visibility and contrast impression of high dynamic range scenes in low dynamic range reproduction devices. A single parameter controls the visibility and contrast in a simple and elegant manner and at interactive speed. The new method is simple to use and is computationally highly efficient. Experiments show that the technique produces good results on a variety of high dynamic range images. The method can also be used to enhance ordinary low dynamic range digital images.

This paper studies an optimization approach for designing tone reproduction curve (TRC) based tone mapping operators for the display of high dynamic range (HDR) images in low dynamic range (LDR) reproduction media. Previous work has shown that the tone mapping problem can be formulated as that of optimizing a two-term cost function where adjusting the relative weightings of the two terms allows users to interactively control the appearance of the output image. However, only heuristic solutions to the tone mapping objective function have been found in past research. The main contribution of this paper is the re-formulation of the objective function to allow the introduction of a closed-form solution to the two-term tone mapping objective function. The new solution has simplified previous heuristic solutions and made this approach mathematically more elegant, computationally faster and practically easier to implement

We present a new tone mapping method for the display of high dynamic range images in low dynamic range devices. We formulate high dynamic range image tone mapping as an optimisation problem. We introduce a two-term cost function, the first term favours linear scaling mapping, the second term favours histogram equalisation mapping, and jointly optimising the two terms optimally maps a high dynamic range image to a low dynamic range image. We control the mapping results by adjusting the relative weightings of the two terms in the objective function. We also present a fast and simple implementation for solving the optimisation problem. We present results to demonstrate that our method works very effectively.

In this paper, we present a computationally efficient, practically easy to use tone mapping techniques for the visualization of high dynamic range (HDR) images in low dynamic range (LDR) reproduction devices. The new method, termed hierarchical nonlinear linear (HNL) tone-mapping operator maps the pixels in two hierarchical steps. The first step allocates appropriate numbers of LDR display levels to different HDR intensity intervals according to the pixel densities of the intervals. The second step linearly maps the HDR intensity intervals to theirs allocated LDR display levels. In the developed HNL scheme, the assignment of LDR display levels to HDR intensity intervals is controlled by a very simple and flexible formula with a single adjustable parameter. We also show that our new operators can be used for the effective enhancement of ordinary images.
