Treatment of wastewater from acrylonitrile-butadiene-Styrene (ABS) resin manufacturing by biological activated carbon (BAC)

Lai Bo; Zhou Yuexi; Yang Liwei; Jiang Jinyuan; Wu Changyong

The wastewater originated from the production of acrylonitrile-butadiene-Styrene (ABS) resin was treated by biological activated carbon (BAC) to investigate the characteristics of adsorption and biodegradation of BAC for ABS resin wastewater and the removal mechanism of the organic pollutants. The results suggested that bioregeneration was the key to BAC, and it could make BAC reach more than 80% of COD, TOC and total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) removal efficiency after the 100th run. Abundant microorganisms were observed on the surface of BAC including long-stem bacteria, vorticella and coccise, which indicated that BAC could protect the microorganisms from the shock loadings of toxic, refractory and complicated ABS resin wastewater.

Simultaneous biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus in a novel internal-loop A/O/IAT-IAT process

Jiang Jinyuan; Zhou Yuexi; Chai Yanli; Wang Haiyan; Liu Hongliang

A novel wastewater biological treatment process, internal-loop Anaerobic/Oxic/double Intermitted Aerobic Tank (A/O/IAT-IAT), was investigated for simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. Satisfactory nitrogen and phosphorus removal performance was achieved in both lab scale reactor and pilot plant. Over 90% removal efficiencies were accomplished in the experiments with average effluent concentration of NH4+-N and PO43--P being 2.5 mg/L and 0.1 mg/L receptively.
