Photorefractive properties of Hf:Fe:LiNbO3 crystals with various [Li]/[Nb] ratios have been investigated at 488 nm wavelength based on the two-wave coupling experiment. High diffraction efficiency and large recording sensitivity are observed and explained. The decrease in Li vacancies is suggested to be the main contributor to the increase in the photoconductivity and subsequently to the induction of the improvement of recording sensitivity. The saturation diffraction efficiency is measured up to 80.2%, and simultaneously the recording sensitivity of 0.91 cm/J is achieved to in the Hf:Fe:LiNbO3 crystal grown from the melt with the [Li]/[Nb] ratio of 1.20, which is significantly enhanced as compared with those of the Hf:Fe:LiNbO3 crystal with the [Li]/[Nb] ratio of 0.94 in melt under the same experimental conditions. Experimental results definitely show that increasing the [Li]/[Nb] ratio in crystal is an effective method for Hf:Fe:LiNbO3 crystal to improve its photorefractive properties.

We report the coexistence of TE and TM surface modes in certain same frequency domain at the interface between one isotropic regular medium and another biaxially anistotropic left-handed medium. The conditions for the existence of TE and TM polarized surface waves in biaxially anisotropic left-handed materials are identified, respectively. The Poynting vector and the energy density associated with surface modes are calculated. Depending on the system parameters, either TE or TM surface modes can have the time averaged Poynting vector directed to or opposite to the mode phase velocity. It is seen that the characteristics of surface waves in biaxially anisotropic left-handed media are significantly different from that in isotropic left-handed media.

The parabolic cylindrical lens shaped quantum dot is investigated theoretically. The Schr?dinger equation for an electron confined in this structure is solved in the parabolic cylindrical coordinate system. The wavefunctions for the electron are presented in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions and the electron energy spectra are also obtained.

The photochemical kinetics of phenanthrenequinone (PQ) doped poly (methyl methacrylate) photopolymer in holographic recording was studied theoretically and experimentally. The diffusion of PQ molecules during holographic recording was negligible because of its small diffusion coefficient at room temperature. A photochemical reaction kinetics model of PQ/PMMA was established. The analytical expressions for the temporal variations of transmittance and diffraction efficiency were derived. By fitting the experimental curves, some parameters related with the polymer components were obtained by the proposed model, which can be used to analyze the photochemical process and will be helpful to the optimization of material preparation.

The electromagnetic properties of the interface between a left-handed material and a conventional nonlinear material were investigated theoretically and numerically. We found a new phenomenon—optical bistability of the interface. It was shown that the incident intensity, incident angle and permeability ratio between the left-handed and the nonlinear materials could dramatically affect the optical bistable behaviour. We also compared the bistable behaviours of different electromagnetic modes. The results indicated that the TE mode was prior to the TM mode to obtain optical bistability for the same parameter.

Enhanced Kerr nonlinearity in a left-handed atomic system consisting of three levels driven by a bichromatic field is presented in this paper. Based on bichromatic field coherence, the real parts of the permittivity and permeability can obtain negative values simultaneously in the same detuning frequency region. By adjusting the frequency difference and the Rabi frequencies of the bichromatic field, the multi-band left-handed behavior of the presented atomic metamaterial is exhibited. Meanwhile, the enhanced Kerr nonlinearity can be realized in this multi-band left-handed three-level atomic system. It is shown that the third-order susceptibility possesses focusing or defocusing properties in the same frequency band.

In the presence of an applied static and uniform magnetic field, a cylindrical Kadomtsev–Petviashivili equation is derived for a relativistic electromagnetic solitary wave propagating in collisionless plasma consisting electrons, positrons, and ions in the case of weak relativistic limit. This equation is solved in a stationary frame to obtain explicit expression for the velocity, amplitude and width of solitons. The amplitude of the solitary wave has a maximum value at a critical αc of the ratio of the ion equilibrium density to the electron one, and it increases as the applied magnetic field becomes larger.

The temporal behavior of the bidirectional phase-conjugate outputs from a coherently induced phase conjugator has been observed on a Cu-doped barium strontium potassium sodium niobate crystal. In our experiment, the phase-conjugate outputs of two incident beams vary smoothly with time if the beam ratio is large. When the beam ratio is reduced, however, each phase-conjugate output will experience a temporal fluctuation. The phase-conjugate output characteristic is found to be dependent on the beam ratio of the two input beams, their positions, their beam-path-length difference and sometimes the input order of the two beams. We present a model of multi-region-interaction to explain the operation of the device and the experimental results in this paper.
