A novel Nd:YAG thin-disk laser with excellent cooling configuration is demonstrated. A maximum output energy of 653 mJ is realized, corresponding to the optical–optical efficiency of 30% and the slope efficiency of 35%. The coefficient of output instability is as low as 1.1% at a repetition rate of 1 Hz. Beam propagation analysis reveals that beam distortion caused by temperature gradient will decrease effectively with this laser configuration.

Series of 70% TeO2 - x% PbO – (30 - x%) NbO2.5 (x = 0, 5, and 10 mol.%) glasses doped with Yb2O3 were prepared by the melt-quenching method. Their emission cross-sections, fluorescence lifetimes and gain coefficient were investigated by the absorption spectra and the fluorescence decay curves, respectively. The results show that the glass with 10% PbO possesses the largest emission cross-section of 1.51 pm2, the fluorescence lifetime of 0.68 ms and the gain coefficient of 1.03 ms ⋅ pm2. These indicate that this tellurite glass may have potential application as Yb2O3 doped gain medium for solid laser.

A series of NaNdF4 nanocrystals was synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route with Nd(C3H7COO)(3)center dot Phen and Nd(NO3)(3)center dot Phen (Phen, 1,10-phenanthroline) as the Nd precursors. Distinct effect of the neutral donor ligand (Phen) on the morphology of NaNdF4 nanocrystals was demonstrated. When Nd(C3H7COO)(3)center dot Phen was chosen and the hydrothermal reaction temperature was controlled at 220 degrees C, the NaNdF4 nanocrystals with uniform short nanorod shape were obtained. The sizes of the as-prepared nanorods could be tuned by changing the hydrothermal temperatures. This method provided a useful way for the preparation of sodium rare-earth fluoride nanocrystals with controlled shapes and sizes.

The neodymium trifluoroacetate complex was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental and TG analysis, FT-IR spectra, and PL spectra. The optical properties of the liquid medium were studied. From the absorption and luminescence spectra, the Judd-Ofelt parameters of the Nd(CF3COO)3 dissovled in phosphorus oxychloride were obtained. Based on the crystal structure, the effects of crystal field and bond valance properties on three intensity parameters Ωt(t=2,4,6) and emission cross-section were analyzed in detail. The emission cross-section of 4F3/2→4I11/2 fluorescence transition (3.63×10-20cm2) of the new neodymium compound was higher than those of other Nd(III) complexes and even comparable with some laser glasses

In this Letter, a miniature wearable Raman spectroscopy system is developed. A wearable fiber-optic probe is employed to help the stable and convenient collection of Raman spectra. A nonlinear partial least squares model based on a multivariate dominant factor is employed to predict the glucose level. The mean coefficients of determination are 0.99, 0.893, and 0.844 for the glucose solution, laboratory rats, and human volunteers. The results demonstrate that a miniature wearable Raman spectroscopy system is feasible to achieve the noninvasive detection of human blood glucose and has important clinical application value in disease diagnosis.

The monodisperse colloidal NdF3 nanorods were synthesised via one-step thermolysis of Nd(CF3COO)3 3H2O in a hot trioctylphosphine oxide solution. The resulting product was characterised by Fourier transform infrared analysis, transmission electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The rod-like nanocrystals possess well shaped fenestral structures. Optical spectra exhibited the colloidal NdF3 nanoparitcles possessing typical Nd3+ ion absorption and photoluminescence emission. The emission cross-section of 4F3/2 → 4I11/2 fluorescence transition was 2.12 × 10–20 cm2, and comparable with some laser glasses.
