We construct a generalization of the quantum Hall effect, where particles move in four dimensional space under a SU(2) gauge field. This system has a macroscopic number of degenerate single particle states. At appropriate integer or fractional filling fractions the system forms an incompressible quantum liquid. Gapped elementary excitation in the bulk interior and gapless elementary excitations at the boundary are investigated.

We study the pairing symmetry of a two-orbital J1-J2 model for FeAs layers in oxypnictides. We show that the mixture of an intraorbital unconventional s_{x;{2}y;{2}} approximately cos(k_{x})cos(k_{y}) pairing symmetry, which changes sign between the electron and hole Fermi surfaces, and a very small d_{x;{2}-y;{2}} approximately cos(k_{x})-cos(k_{y}) component is favored in a large part of the J1-J2 phase diagram. A pure s_{x;{2}y;{2}} pairing state is favored for J2>J1. The signs of the d_{x;{2}-y;{2}} order parameters in the two different orbitals are opposite. While a small d_{xy} approximately sin(k_{x})sin(k_{y}) interorbital pairing coexists in the above phases, the intraorbital d_{xy} pairing is not favored even for large J2.

We derive an effective topological field theory model of the four dimensional quantum Hall liquid state recently constructed by Zhang and Hu. Using a generalization of the flux attachment transformation, the effective field theory can be formulated as a U

We investigate the superconducting phase in the K(x)Ba(1-x)Fe2As2 122 compounds from moderate to strong hole-doping regimes. Using the functional renormalization group, we show that, while the system develops a nodeless anisotropic s(±) order parameter in the moderately doped regime, gapping out the electron pockets at strong hole doping drives the system into a nodal (cos k(x) + cos k(y))(cos k(x) - cos k(y)) d-wave superconducting state. This is in accordance with recent experimental evidence from measurements on KFe2As2 which observe a nodal order parameter in the extreme doping regime. The magnetic instability is strongly suppressed.

We report inelastic neutron scattering studies of magnetic excitations in antiferromagnetically ordered SrFe2As2 (T_{N}=200-220 K), the parent compound of the FeAs-based superconductors. At low temperatures (T=7 K), the magnetic spectrum S(Q,Plancks omega) consists of a Bragg peak at the elastic position (Plancks omega=0 meV), a spin gap (Delta< or =6.5 meV), and sharp spin-wave excitations at higher energies. Based on the observed dispersion relation, we estimate the effective magnetic exchange coupling using a Heisenberg model. On warming across T_{N}, the low-temperature spin gap rapidly closes, with weak critical scattering and spin-spin correlations in the paramagnetic state. The antiferromagnetic order in SrFe2As2 is therefore consistent with a first order phase transition, similar to the structural lattice distortion.

In this work we investigate collective excitations at the boundary of a recently constructed four-dimensional (4D) quantum Hall state. Local bosonic operators for creating these collective excitations can be constructed explicitly. Massless relativistic w

we construct a class of projected SO(5) models where the Gutwiller constraint of no-double-occupancy is implemented exactly. We introduce the concept of projected SO(5) symmetry where all static correlation functions are exactly SO(5) symmetric and discus
