A Smart Gateway Architecture for Improving Efficiency of Home Network Applications

Fei Ding; Aiguo Song; En Tong; Jianqing Li

A smart home gateway plays an important role in the Internet of Things (IoT) system that takes responsibility for the connection between the network layer and the ubiquitous sensor network (USN) layer. Even though the home network application is developing rapidly, researches on the home gateway based open development architecture are less. This makes it difficult to extend the home network to support new applications, share service, and interoperate with other home network systems. An integrated access gateway (IAGW) is proposed in this paper which upward connects with the operator machine-to-machine platform (M2M P/F). In this home network scheme, the gateway provides standard interfaces for supporting various applications in home environments, ranging from on-site configuration to node and service access. In addition, communication management ability is also provided by M2M P/F. A testbed of a simple home network application system that includes the IAGW prototype is created to test its user interaction capabilities. Experimental results show that the proposed gateway provides significant flexibility for users to configure and deploy a home automation network; it can be applied to other monitoring areas and simultaneously supports a multi-ubiquitous sensor network.

Design and implementation of ZigBee based gateway for environmental monitoring system

Fei Ding; Guangming Song; Kaijian Yin; Jianqing Li; Aiguo Song

This paper proposed a three-part framework for deploying an environmental monitoring system (EMS). An enhanced gateway which supports Bluetooth based local wireless access and GPRS based remote communication is designed to be an interface between the client tier and a deployed ZigBee wireless sensor network. The binding mechanism which associates a service on one node with a service on another node is used so as to allow communication between two services to be performed without the need to specify the address. An implementation for verifying the EMS including the gateway as well as the sMotes is presented, and experimental results show that, the proposed architecture can achieve the environmental monitoring performance, and except the gateway, other nodes in the system work on sleep mode at most of the time, which will improve the lifetime of the whole system efficiently.

An adaptive localisation algorithm of mobile node in wireless sensor network

Fei Ding; Aiguo Song; Jianqing Li; Guangming Song

Location information is critical to monitoring activities in wireless sensor networks. This paper proposed an adaptive localisation algorithm of mobile node in wireless sensor network for solving this problem. The structure decomposition, electronic control and kinematics model of the proposed mobile node have been investigated, respectively. Improvements have been demonstrated through eliminates the positioning error caused by situations such as node self-energy, data packet loss, low measured value and singular values. A testbed has finally been created for validating the adaptive localisation capability of mobile nodes in wireless sensor network. Experimental results show that the proposed adaptive localisation algorithm can be applied in real use, and precision and stability are upper, and promote the speed and practicability of mobile node in wireless sensor networks using in undesirable environments.

Design of a Distributed Networking Based Radiation Monitoring System

Fei Ding; Aiguo Song; Jianqing Li; Zhen-Yang Wu

This paper presents the design of a novel radiated sources monitoring system. With the lightweight and global positioning features, the implemented wireless radiation detection node can easily be deployed to discover unusual or abnormal radioactivity and map the events. ZigBee-based multi-hop mesh communication is adopted between radiated detection nodes. For every node in within the network, there is at least one other node for communication. This multi-hop network structure can pave better network connectivity and self-healing ability than traditional star pattern. Thus, on-field deployment can be easily implemented, and the application of the system can be promoted.
