We investigated the nonlinear optical properties of new BaAlBO(3)F(2)(BABF) crystal. The high quality BABF is nonhygroscopic and possesses a moderate birefringence suitable for UV light generation. On the basis of its refractive index dispersion curves, it is inferred that BABF has great potential applications nonlinear optical material, notably for UV light generation at 355 nm. In order to characterize its nonlinear optical properties, BABF samples were cut an oriented in phase matching conditions The optical conversion efficiency from 1064 nm to 532 nm was investigated for the first time: up to 49.0% were achieved. The external angular acceptance bandwidth of SHG and THG for 1064 nm pump light was measured.

Abstract Predominantly single phase Zr3Al3C5 powders were synthesized in an Ar atmosphere using Zr – Al intermetallics and graphite as starting materials. The reaction path of Zr3Al3C5 synthesis was discussed based on differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction results. Lattice parameters of Zr3Al3C5 determined using the Rietveld method are a = 3.347 Å and c = 27.642 Å. In addition, the oxidation of Zr3Al3C5 powders was tested by using thermogravimetry – differential scanning calorimetry. The starting and complete oxidation temperatures are 400 °C and 1200 °C, respectively. These temperatures are much higher than those for ZrC, suggesting that Zr3Al3C5 has better oxidation resistance than ZrC. On the other hand, the oxidation degree of Zr3Al3C5, defined for the complete carbide – oxide transformation, overshot 100 % during oxidation. This overshooting is attributed to the formation of amorphous carbon. The phase evolution during the oxidation of Zr3Al3C5 was also investigated.

BaAlBO3F2 (BABF), a newly developed nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal, was fully investigated for high-power harmonic generation of UV light. This was performed after successfully growing high-quality single crystals in the LiF–B2O3–NaF flux system. Thermal expansion, specific heat, transmittance spectrum, nonlinear optical coefficients, and laser damage threshold were measured. High-power NLO experiments were also conducted for what we believe to be the first time for BABF crystals. Because BABF is absolutely not hygroscopic, the appealing physical, chemical, optical, and NLO properties make BABF a promising NLO crystal for practical application in high-power UV light generation.
