An Efficient Design of Security Accelerator for IEEE 802.15.4 Wireless Senor Networks

Ohyoung Song; Jiho Kim

In this paper, we provide a low cost AES core for ZigBee devices which accelerates the computation of AES algorithms. Also, by embedding the AES core, we present an efficient architecture of security accelerator satisfying the IEEE 802.15.4 specifications. In our experiments, we observed that the AES core and the security accelerator use fewer logic gates and consume lower power than other architectures based on blockwide and folded ones.

Wan-Hee Cho; Jiho Kim; Ohyoung Song

Wireless sensor nodes with single chips may have insufficient resources for certain applications. We propose a resource management protocol for applications with constrained resources to improve effectiveness by borrowing resources from a resource management server.

Compact Design of the Advanced Encryption Standard Algorithm for IEEE 802.15.4 Devices

Ohyoung Song; Jiho Kim

For low-power sensor networks, a compact design of advanced encryption standard (AES) algorithm is needed. A very small AES core for ZigBee devices that accelerates computation in AES algorithms is proposed in this paper. The proposed AES core requires only one S-Box, which plays a major role in the optimization. It consumes less power than other block-wide and folded architectures because it uses fewer logic gates. The results show that the proposed design significantly decreases power dissipation; however, the resulting increased clock cycles for 128-bit block data processing are reasonable for IEEE 802.15.4 standard throughputs.

Hardware-software co-design of secure WLAN system for high throughput

Ohyoung Song; Jiho Kim

Wireless communication is a fast-growing technology to provide the flexibility and mobility for the users. But it is less secure than wired networks, and then wireless security is becoming an important in product research and development area. In this paper, we provide a hardware-software co-design of robust security for WLAN. The design objective is to provide an efficient architecture that satisfies the constraints such as processing delay and data throughput required in standards. We have implemented the design supporting IEEE 802.11n. Finally, we show its results of implementation and evaluate performance.

Design and implementation of efficient cipher engine for IEEE 802.11i compatible with IEEE 802.11n and IEEE 802.11e

For high data rate, new MAC mechanisms such as Block Ack in IEEE 802.11e and frame aggregation in IEEE 802.11n are being currently discussed and these mechanisms need short response time in each MPDU processing. In this paper, we propose a design of cipher engine for IEEE 802.11i to support these new mechanisms. We reduce the processing overhead of RC4 key scheduling by means of using the dual S-Box scheme. In CCMP design, parallel structure is proposed, and as a result, we reduce the processing time to 1/2 in comparison with the sequential structure and the response time independent of the size of the payload and only dependent on the clock frequency. In addition, we can expect to decrease power consumption in CMOS design process because the clock frequency reduces to 1/5 and the area doubles compared to the typical designs.

Intelligent energy management system for smart offices

Jiho Kim; Wan-Hee Cho; Yongjin Jeong; Ohyoung Song

This paper presents an intelligent energy management system (IEMS) for smart offices. Our system includes the smart socket device that integrates ZigBee controlled outlets and a power metering device. We propose a new smart socket which has only one power/energy IC to measure the power consumption of every power-outlet by the probe multiplexer. The IEMS can control the power consumption of various appliances intellectually.

Design and implementation of IEEE 802.11i architecture for next generation WLAN

Duhyun Bae; Jiho Kim; Sehyun Park; Ohyoung Song

The drive for high data rate and QoS support in wireless LANs has pushed the IEEE to develop IEEE 802.11n and IEEE 802.11e. For higher throughput, new MAC mechanisms such as Block Ack in IEEE 802.11e and frame aggregation in IEEE 802.11n are being currently discussed and these mechanisms needs short response time in each MPDU processing. In this paper, we propose a design of IEEE 802.11i hardware architecture to support these new MAC mechanisms. We reduce the response time in the crypto engine to short constant interval by using the dual S-Box scheme in WEP and TKIP processing and by adopting parallel structure in CCMP. In our method, the key management block is used to eliminate the computational burden for key and per-packet counter management in 802.11i device driver. Our design features 195 Mbps in WEP, TKIP, and 562 Mbps in CCMP throughput respectively at 50 MHz frequency, which are targeted to Altera Stratix FPGA device.

Wan-Hee Cho; Jiho Kim; Ohyoung Song

In general, a ZigBee device with a single-chip has insufficient resources. In this paper, we introduce resource constraint applications and propose a resource management protocol in order to make these applications work more effectively by borrowing resources from the resource management server.

Privacy Management Based on Profile for Personalized Services in u-City

Jungyu Lee; Jiho Kim; Ohyoung Song

PURPOSE: A system for protecting and managing individual information based on profile for providing customized service in c-city environment are provided to respectively set security level of varying individual information and determine to provide service through profile matching with service profile according to a user profile, thereby providing customized service of reinforced security. CONSTITUTION: A situation analysis engine(120) infers situation of a user through situation information. An security information engine(130) substitutes for a service list with a corresponding service profile list. A profile comparison module(140) outputs a matched service item by comparison of the service profile list with a user profile. A service configuration module(310) directs determination and execution of service about the service item. A security behavior(340) selects a key system and encryption algorithm according to the classification and sensitivity of individual information.
