Abstract This paper presents a histogram-based template matching method that copes with the large scale difference between target and template images. Most of the previous template matching methods are sensitive to the scale difference between target and template images because the features extracted from the images are changed according to the scale of the images. To overcome this limitation, we introduce the concept of dominant gradients and describe an image as the feature that is tolerant to scale changes. To this end, we first extract the dominant gradients of a template image and represent the template image as the grids of histograms of the dominant gradients. Then, the arbitrary regions of a target image with various locations and scales are matched with the template image via histogram matching. Experimental results show that the proposed method is more robust to scale difference than previous template matching techniques.

The training time of Adaboost to obtain the strong classifier is usually time-consuming. Moreover, to deal with rotated faces, it is natural to need much more processing time for both training and execution stages. In this paper, we propose new efficient and fast multi-view face detection method based on Adaboost. From the robustness property of Harr-like feature, we first construct the strong classifier more effective to detect rotated face, and then we also propose new method that can reduce the training time. We call the method feature transformation method, which rotates and reflects entire weak classifiers of the strong classifier to construct new strong classifiers. Using our proposed feature transformation method, elapsed training time decrease significantly. We also test our face detectors on real-time HD images, and the results show the effectiveness of our proposed method.

This paper presents a bidirectional interactive contents player for terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB). The presented player is capable of sending user requests to a proper return channel server using information included in a scene presentation. The player provides functionality to combine requested data received via communication networks with the initially broadcasted contents to present additional information to users. The result of a request transmitted back through the broadcasting network can also be presented properly using the presented player.

This paper presents the interactive rich media player based on MPEG-4 LASeR. A Rich media service is dynamic, interactive collection of multimedia data such as audio, video, graphics and text. And LASeR tunes and optimizes each feature required by rich media services to effectively fulfill the need of an open standard. Throughout this paper, we will introduce the usage of interactive rich media service, a technical overview of MPEG-4 LASeR. And the implementation of the interactive rich media player and its capabilities are presented along with usage examples.

Through the development of pattern recognition methods, many researchers have proposed various systems to control a TV that can be activated automatically without devices. In this paper, we propose a control owner switching system of TV via multi-user face recognition and head gesture recognition. We mainly focus on rotation invariant and wide-range (up to four meters) multi-user face recognition so that the system can be applied to indoor environments. In addition, we propose a deviceless TV control owner switching system using a small behavior of the user. As a method of switching, we suggest switching the TV control ownership by shaking the users head from left to right for a few times. Experimental result shows that switching system is perfect for transferring control ownership.

Eye tracking technology is useful to provide faster and more intuitive control interface. Thus, eye tracking is popular in evaluating contents such as advertisements. It have helped researchers to analyse the users attention and it finally makes more contents better. This paper introduced the system for visualizing and analysing users gaze information. Detailed implementation of the proposed system and its capabilities are presented along with usage examples. This system can be applied to various fields such as analysis of driver attention, web page layout, advertisement effectiveness, product sales, and so on.
