Peer-Facilitator Training and Group Leadership Experiences with Low-Performing Elementary School Students

Jim Gumaer

A total of 64 low-performing fifth-grade students from each of four elementary schools were assigned to treatment and control groups through a stratified random sampling procedure. Students in the experimental group received peer-facilitator training twice each week for three weeks and a group leadership experience. All students were pretested and posttested on six criterion measures which examined attitudes toward school, selfesteem, class social status, classroom behavior, classroom performance, and school attendance. Differences between sexes of student participants and counselor effect were also examined.
