Cost impact of hospital acquired diagnoses and impacts for funding based on quality signals

Background Internationally, there have been efforts to adjust hospital funding based on the quality of care provided by the hospital. A variety of approaches has been used by different countries and payers. Incorporating quality signals into activity-based funding is also a possibility for Australia. This study set out to explore the cost impact of potentially poor quality care in Australian hospitals, and to understand the implications from a funding perspective.

Hospital admissions by socio‐economic status: does the Inverse care law‘ apply to older Australians?

Objective: To investigate whether the ‘inverse care law’ applies to New South Wales (NSW) hospital admissions ‐ especially to older people with high socio‐economic status (SES).

10. Resource for long term change in health and equity

A key feature of the NSW health system is its 17 geographically-based area health services (AHSs). Funding to the AHSs by the NSW Department of Health has been guided by the objective of providing the AHSs with a share of resources that allows the achievement of comparable access to health services, assuming the achievement of reasonable levels of efficiency.
