Characteristics of the Threshold-Based IR-UWB Positioning System

Jimyung Kang; Moon-kyoung Kang; Soon-Woo Lee; Youngjin Park; Kwanho Kim

In this paper, we show the characteristics of the threshold-based IR-UWB location positioning system by experiment. We found that this system provides distance-dependent accuracy because the arrival time of the pulse is detected by threshold using 1-bit ADC (Analog to Digital Convertor). We also propose a simple compensation method based on measurement to improve positioning accuracy. The proposed method improves positioning error down to 52.7%.

Weighted-beacon least square positioning method based on measurement

Jimyung Kang; Soon-Woo Lee; Moon-kyoung Kang; Young-Jin Park; Kwan-Ho Kim

In this paper, we propose a simple location positioning method based on our own IR-UWB system. First, we examine the sampling characteristics of pulse-arrival-time. Second, we propose a simple location positioning method (WB-LS) based on our observation. The WB-LS method takes the sampling characteristic at each beacon into consideration when it calculates the position of the tag. It shows a much improved location estimation performance (up to 50%) compared to the LS method which does not consider the difference of beacons.

Simple threshold estimation for a 1-bit ADC in a low complex IR-UWB receiver

Soon-Woo Lee; Jimyung Kang; Yong-Hwa Kim; Youngjin Park

This paper proposes a simple threshold estimation algorithm for a 1-bit ADC in a 1-bit IR-UWB receiver which uses binary output of the 1-bit ADC instead of measuring energy level of received signals. Theoretical model and computer simulation show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is similar to that of theoretically optimum one.

A Common Signaling Mechanism for Coexistence between High-speed Power Line Communication

Hui-Myoung Oh; Sungsoo Choi; Jimyung Kang; Won-Tae Lee

AbstractIn the field of high-speed power line communications, there are three major standards; ISO/IEC 12139–1, IEEE 1901–2010, and ITU-T G.99xx. However, they are not interoperable because of having their own physical and MAC layer specification. Actually, they cannot even avoid interfering with each other because they are using the same frequency band of 1 ∼ 30 MHz. In this paper, a common signaling mechanism is suggested which uses multi-carrier partitioning and carrier sensing, so that all standards can be coexisted by sharing time resource. The suggested mechanism has been compared with the ISP protocol which is included in IEEE and ITU-T standard for coexistence.

Hidden terminal of Korea Standard PLC protocol in access network

Jimyung Kang; Yong-Hwa Kim; Kwanho Kim

In this paper, we show the hidden terminal problem of Korea Standard protocol in the PLC access network. PLC access network has serious hidden terminal problem at the master nodes because of its topology characteristic. We propose simple strategies to improve performance. The proposed strategies can make network operate in acceptable throughput range when original KS provides near-zero throughput.

An IR-UWB Receiver Design for Low Cost Applications

Soon-Woo Lee; Youngjin Park; Jimyung Kang; Kwanho Kim

In this paper we present an energy collection based non-coherent low power and low complexity IR-UWB (Impulse Radio Ultra Wide Band) receiver which is robust against multipath fading. The proposed receiver adopts an integrator, a 1-bit sampler and a digital symbol synchronizer replacing with a classical RAKE structure, a high complex ADC and PLL respectively. Since the receiver is composed of such simple modules, we can reduce the total cost drastically. The performance of the proposed receiver is simulated based on IEEE 802.15.4a channel model.
