The skin of human is constantly being exposed to environmental irritants such as ultraviolet, smoke and chemicals. These irritants cause free radicals and reactive oxygen species which leave serious damages on the cells of skin. The water and ethanol extracts of Cambodian Phellinus linteus were investigated for the activities of anti-lipid peroxidation and anti-wrinkle effects to apply as a functional ingredient for cosmetic products. As the result of evaluation of liquid oxidation rate by add Fe²? and Cu²? to Cambodian Phellinus linteus extracts, Cambodian Phellinus linteus ethanol extracts were higher than Cambodian Phellinus linteus water extracts in the chealting ability of Fe²? and Cu²?. The Cambodian Phellinus linteus ethanol extracts exhibited that anti-lipid peroxidation higher than butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) at the concentration of 0.1 ㎎/㎖, 0.5 ㎎/㎖ and 1 ㎎/㎖. Cambodian Phellinus linteus water and ethanol extracts showed a higher inhibitory effect on Fe²?-induced lipid peroxidation compared to Cu²?-induced lipid peroxidation. In the case of anti-wrinkle effect, the elastase inhibition activity of Cambodian Phellinus linteus ethanol extracts was 50.7%, and it is higher than urosolic acid at the concentration of 0.01 ㎎/㎖. Also, in collagenase inhibition activity, Cambodian Phellinus linteus water extract showed low effect, but Cambodian Phellinus linteus ethanol extract was about 50% at a 0.1 ㎎/㎖. concentration. These results proved that Cambodian Phellinus linteus had anti-lipid peroxidation and anti-wrinkle effect. Therefore, Cambodian Phellinus linteus could be useful as an anti-wrinkle cosmetic ingredient. The skin of human is constantly being exposed to environmental irritants such as ultraviolet, smoke and chemicals. Coptis chinensis (CC) is used in conventional Chinese medicine. The main active components of CC are isoquinoline alkaloids, including berberine, coptisine, palmatine, and magnoflorine; all these are known to have several pharmacological properties. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a well-known synthetic biocompatible polymer suitable for a range of pharmaceutical uses; it can be used as a matrix for the incorporation of functional materials and has a wide range of applications in the cosmetics, food, pharmaceutical, and packaging industries. In this study, PVA-based electrospun nanofibers containing CC extract were successfully fabricated. Furthermore, the effects of different CC extract contents on the morphologies, and antimicrobial and antifungal properties of PVA/CC extract nanofibers were investigated. Morphological changes were observed using different molecular weights of PVA. For characterization, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier transform infrared analysis were performed. The effectiveness of these nanofibers has been demonstrated by evaluating the thermal stability against Staphylococcus aureus, antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, and the antifungal activity against the fungi Aureobasidium pullulans and Penicillium pinophilum. The PVA/CC extract nanofibers were found to have excellent antibacterial and antifungal activity and thermal stability; hence, their use in medicinal sectors is highly recommended.

Existing pharmaceutical studies show that Magnolia biondii is effective in treating rhinitis and in reducing cholesterol, given its endogenous, volatile ingredients. The study herein seeks to assess the cosmeceutical activities and anti-inflammatory activities of Magnolia biondii extracts for possible application as cosmetic ingredients. The cosmeceutical and anti-inflammatory activities were investigated using hydroxyl radical scavenging, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibition, cell viability, nitric oxide (NO) inhibition, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression by Western blotting. Magnolia biondii extracts were identified to have antioxidant activities in hydroxyl free radical scavenging, SOD-like activity, and XO inhibition. In testing the anti-inflammatory activities of the extracts, NO production was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, in a dose-dependent manner, the Magnolia biondii extracts were able to suppress iNOS expression in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells. From these results, Magnolia biondii showed adequate potential for application in cosmetic production and related industries as well as a functional material.
