Comparison of the effects of sevoflurane and propofol anaesthesia on regional cerebral glucose metabolism in humans using positron emission tomography

Yuri Jeong; Jungdae Kim; Seunghwan Jeong; Jin Wan Park; In-Cheol Choi

This study compared brain glucose metabolism during sevoflurane anaesthesia and propofol anaesthesia using positron emission tomography (PET) in the same eight human volunteers. All the volunteers were anaesthetized twice, with a 1-week interval. Half of the volunteers received sevoflurane on the first occasion and propofol on the second; the other half received the two anaesthetics in the reverse order. PET scans using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose were performed after sevoflurane or propofol anaesthesia. The relative glucose metabolic rate (rGMR) in the brain was assessed with statistical parametric mapping. Propofol suppressed the rGMR of the neocortex area more than sevoflurane, and sevoflurane suppressed the rGMR of the paleocortex and telencephalon more than propofol. These findings suggest that these two anaesthetics act via different mechanisms and may provide an important clue to the relationship between anaesthesia and the brain.

Painterly rendering with designed imperfection

Jin Wan Park; Bon Ki Koo; Rick Barry; Sung Dea Hong; Kyunghyun Yoon

Even a highly skilled painter is unable to predict all the events that may occur on a canvas. As a result, a painter’s eyes, hands, and brain continue to make errors; and although the sum of the errors is often adverse to the intention of the artist, it frequently becomes a chance to create unique expression. The process of adaptation to obstacles and subjugation by inevitable restrictions (material, skill...etc) are what make paintings more humane and beautiful. We assumed these to be the core systems of a human being’s painting process.

Multi-layered stack mosaic with rotatable objects

Jin Wan Park; Kyunghyun Yoon; Seung Taek Ryoo

We present a new type of mosaic, the multi-layered stack mosaic with photographs of rotated objects. Our algorithm uses multi-layered Photomosaics with database enrichment by element rotation. The benefit of this algorithm is that an artist can not only produce a digital mosaic with a relatively small database without degrading the quality of the mosaic, but that the Multi-layered Stack Mosaic also generates unique and strong artistic expressions which gives an illusion of piled stackable objects. Since the result has a unique visual style, we intend to exhibit our mosaic images at galleries such as the Epson Color Imaging Contest and the CAU Art Center.

Development of Classification System Applied Particularity Culture Contents

Hyoyoung Kim; Jin Wan Park

In this study, we propose a new CT classification system which is essential factor for strengthening competitiveness of culture contents and technical assistance of convergence contents. For this, we drew particularity of culture contents by reviewing concept and current state of CT. And also we drew problems of existing CT classification systems and implications for applying to future CT classification system by systematic analysis of existing CT classification systems. Through this series of process we developed a new CT classification system applied particularity of culture contents. The suggested CT classification system can embrace all kind of technologies related to all steps of value chain-planning, manufacturing/production, distribution, service- of culture contents. And it has significance having flexibility for government investigation and applying the law and more realistic for industrial site by restructuring of middle classification level.

Visual Genealogy: Mr. PARK, Myrang-Hwarok Clan

Jin Wan Park; Gyuwan Choe

A human life is not generated spontaneously; our existence is a random combination of hazy vestiges of our ancestors. The idea behind this artwork is to compress half a millennium of data about peoples lives into a single computer-generated image. Visual Genealogy shows the family tree of Mr. Park (Myrang clan, hwarok party) and reveals the cognitive meanings of a complex dataset (in this case, the data are life and death).

This study investigated the effect of a pre-operative low dose of intravenous ketamine on tourniquet-induced haemodynamic changes. Ten minutes after induction of general anaesthesia, 0.1 mg/kg ketamine in 10 ml of saline (ketamine group, n = 14) or 10 ml of normal saline (control group, n = 14) were administered intravenously. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and heart rate relative to tourniquet inflation and deflation were recorded and compared within and between groups. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures in the control group significantly increased relative to baseline during the observation period following tourniquet inflation, but generally did not significantly increase in the ketamine group. The control group had a greater percentage of patients with a 30% rise in blood pressure at 60 min after tourniquet inflation compared with the ketamine group (28.6% vs 7.1%), but this was not statistically significant. We conclude that a pre-operative low dose (0.1 mg/kg) of intravenous ketamine can prevent a systemic arterial pressure increase for at least 60 min after tourniquet inflation under general anaesthesia.

Genre Visualization Based on Words Used in Text

Hyoyoung Kim; Jin Wan Park

Text visualization is one of sectors in data visualization. This study is on methods to visually represent text’s contents, structure, and form aspects based on various analytic techniques about wide range of text data. In this study -as a text visualization study-, 1) a method to find out the characteristics of a book’s genre using words in the text of the book was looked into, 2) elements of visualization of a book’s genre based on verification through an experiment were drew, and 3) the ways to intuitionally and efficiently visualize this were explained. According to visualization suggested by this study, first, actual genre of a book can be understood based on words used in the book. Second, with which genre is closed to the book can be found out with one glance through images of visualization. Moreover, the characteristics of complicated genres included in a book can be understood. Furthermore, the level of closeness (similarity) of a genre -which is found to be a representative genre using the number of dots, curvature of a curve, and brightness in the image- can be assumed. Finally, the outcome of this study can be used for a variety of fields including book customizing service such as a book recommendation system that provides images of personal preference books or genres through application of books favored by individual customers.

A Review on Expressive Materials and Approaches to Text Visualization

Hyoyoung Kim; Jin Wan Park

In this study, we contemplated types, essence, characteristics of text data which is material for visual expression of text visualization part of data visualization research and also analysed the multidirectional means of expressive approach for it. Studies of text visualization are spread dramastically under the influence of computer development, open data, wide use of visualization tools, etc. For these reasons, text visualization works have been creating as art works or output of research through various inter-discipline convergent research with engineering, art, humanities, sociology, etc. Nevertheless the theoretical studies on text data itself and its visualization, and also systematic analysis of its approach are rarely made. Data is target of understanding and interpretation, and it has infinite information and possibility with process and approach for it. Considering the attainable status of data in future human society, text visualization which is convergent academic field of study starting with understanding and interpretation of data needs further methodological research and theoretical accumulate.

This study compared emergence and recovery characteristics after either enflurane anaesthesia or crossover from enflurane to desflurane anaesthesia. At an estimated 1 h prior to the end of operation, enflurane was either reduced (group E, n = 23) or replaced with desflurane (group X, n = 23). At the end of the operation, emergence and recovery characteristics of the two groups were compared. The crossover technique accelerated recovery compared with enflurane anaesthesia. The time taken for the eyes to open in response to painful pinching or a verbal command, and to regain awareness of age and name, were significantly shorter after crossover anaesthesia than after enflurane anaesthesia. The digit symbol substitution test and serial seven test scores were significantly better in patients subjected to crossover anaesthesia than in those subjected to enflurane anaesthesia. We conclude that, during surgery, the substitution of enflurane with desflurane in the latter part of anaesthesia can improve recovery.

Visual genealogy

Jin Wan Park; June Seok Seo

A common aspect of Till Nowak’s work is inversion of the spectator’s point of view. Here it is reflected by wholesome vegetables in the role of a bloodthirsty creature. Maybe we can recognize ourselves in this ironic portrait of our society as humans acting like wolves in a sheep’s clothing. We are so well off as inhabitants of a wholesome society that we ignore the fact that we also live in a world in which people die of hunger and bloodshed through famine and war on a daily basis.
