A Lewis acid promoted cascade cycloaddition/ring-opening of 2-furylcarbinols with alkyl or aryl azides is described. The reaction features an initial formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition to form a trisubstitued triazole motif, followed by a ring opening of furan to generate the (E)-configuration of the enone. A wide range of highly functionalized triazoles is expediently and efficiently synthesized in a highly step-economical manner.

A Combination of Furfuryl Cation Induced Three-Component Reactions and Photocatalyst-Free Photoisomerization To Construct Complex Triazoles

A novel stereospecific synthesis of ( Z)- and ( E)-β-triazole-acrylates by the combined use of a multicomponent reaction and photocatalyst-free photoisomerization is presented. The former can be regarded as a furfuryl cation induced formal [3 + 2]-cycloaddition/ring-opening/esterification domino sequence, which provides fast access to a variety of structurally diverse ( Z)-β-triazole-acrylates. The products were further photoisomerized to ( E)-configuration by UV irradiation. This efficient strategy was utilized in the concise synthesis of histone deacetylase inhibtor NSC746457 in high yield.

Zero-thermal-quenching and photoluminescence tuning with the assistance of carriers from defect cluster traps

Thermal quenching is a serious limiting factor for high-power phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) due to the temperature increase that results in emission loss by non-radiative transitions. Herein, we report new Tb3+-doped Sr8ZnSc(PO4)7 phosphors with zero-thermal-quenching and tunable photoluminescence behaviors. As verified by thermoluminescence (TL) spectra, the carriers captured by shallow traps were transferred to 5D3 energy level of Tb3+, compensating the inhibition on blue 5D3 → 7FJ emissions from the increasing concentration (x) of Tb3+; therefore, the emission color was tuned from bright blue (0.205, 0.186) to white (0.215, 0.273) and finally to bright green (0.245, 0.411) upon 370 nm UV excitation as a function of x. In addition, the zero-thermal-quenching behavior at high temperatures up to 225 °C benefited from the carriers captured by deeper traps. Thus, the reported Sr8ZnSc(PO4)7:xTb3+ phosphors may be candidates for high-power pc-WLEDs.

Bifunctional Furfuryl Cations Strategy: Three-Component Synthesis of Enamidyl Triazoles.

A new multicomponent synthesis of functionalized enamidyl triazoles starting from simple and readily available starting materials is described. A simple treatment of a dichloromethane solution of an azide, amine, and 5-bromo-2-furylcarbinol with a Lewis acid provides the enamidyl triazole in good to high yield. A triple domino sequence, formal [3+2] cycloaddition/ring-opening/amidation, is involved in this new skeleton-generating reaction.
