A time domain photonic arbitrary waveform generator (PAWG) scheme based on multi-wavelength optical differential quadrature phase shift keying modulation in combination with differential detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The time domain method shows advantages of large time-bandwidth product, good flexibility, fast waveform refreshing rate, and high waveform quality over the frequency domain method. In contrast with other proposed time domain PAWGs or photonic digital-to-analog converters, our PAWG proposal shows a greater dynamic range and a larger noise margin due to its bipolar output, and possesses good scalabilities both in resolution and sampling rate. Assisted with the integration technology, this PAWG presents a good prospect for broad range practical applications in future.

A novel weighed and summing bipolar photonic digital-to-analog converter (BPDAC) scheme employing optical differential phase shift keying modulation and balanced detection is proposed and demonstrated in a proof-of-principle experiment of three-bit resolution and 2.5-GS/s conversion rate. Compared with the existing unipolar PDAC schemes, this BPDAC has a greater dynamic range and a larger noise margin. Compared with our previously proposed BPDAC based on optical differential quadrature phase shift keying modulation, it is much more robust to the phase detuning, and the tolerable range is greatly expanded from ±1° to ±18°.

A novel 2N bit bipolar photonic digital-to-analog converter (PDAC) scenario based on the optical differential quadrature phase shift keying (ODQPSK) modulation coupled with differential detection is proposed. Compared with other proposed schemes, this bipolar PDAC has a greater dynamic range and a larger noise margin with good scalabilities both in speed and resolution. We demonstrate a 4 bit PDAC in a proof-of-principle experiment at a sampling rate of 2.5 GS/s.

A new optical-frequency comb-based microwave photonic harmonic down-convertor with tunable and reconfigurable filtering is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The coherent evenly spaced optical carriers offer harmonic down-conversion for ultrahigh radio frequency signals with low-frequency local oscillator, and construct a tunable and reconfigurable bandpass filter for the intermediate-frequency (IF) signal combined with dispersion. This implementation features high conversion efficiency. Experimental results show the filtered output IF signal has a clean spectrum with high quality. Measured conversion loss is 8.3 dB without extra electrical amplification.

A clock recovery scheme simultaneous providing signal performance monitoring is proposed and demonstrated in a 112-Gbit/s NRZ-DQPSK system. By employing optical domain frequency down-conversion, the clock is recovered with standard RF devices.

A novel 2-bit PDAC based on quadrature phase modulation and differential demodulation together with balanced detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated at sampling rates of 2.5GS/s and 10GS/s. The simulation results of expanded 4-bit PDAC from the 2-bit PDAC unit by using two channels of incoherent light with different wavelength are presented. This PDAC scheme is simple, compact and effective with high expansibility. Compared with other approaches, this methods output signal has a greater dynamic range and a higher noise margin.

Using differential detection, we perform polarization-multiplexing 160-Gb/s optical non-return-to-zero (NRZ) differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK) signal transmission over 100-km standard single mode fiber at a bit error rate (BER) of less than 10-9. The enabling technology includes clock recovery, fine dispersion compensation, and polarization tracking for de-multiplexing. Furthermore, a hybrid clock recovery scheme is proposed. The scheme is realized with ordinary devices using an optoelectrical modulator to down-convert the clock frequency and a phase-locked loop for filtering, which can provide an indication signal that simultaneously monitors residual dispersion and tracking polarization.
