Inserting cartridges using electrically powered ramming devices

Jiri Balla; Martin Macko; Zbynek Krist; Cong Ich Le; Stefan Timar; Ivan Kopecky

The paper describes new approach to finding characteristics of 73 mm rammed cartridge in the BMP-1 IFV (infantry fighting vehicle), 125 mm rammed projectiles in T-72 MBT (main battle tank), and the ramming devices used in both weapon systems during rounds inserting into the barrel. The results are displacements, derived velocities and accelerations of cartridges and projectiles. Armature current and source voltage enable to estimate the required power for the ramming device. The results will use for validation of dynamic models, and as diagnostic data of loading systems with electric power. The described procedures serve as examples of repair diagnostic techniques in the top military units as well.

Autoloader functional diagram determination handling fixed ammunition

Jiri Balla; Stanislav Procházka; Martin Macko; Zbynek Krist; Cong Ich Le; Stefan Timar; Peter Liptak

The article presents new methodology of an autoloader functional diagram determination for a fixed cartridge using electric drivers. The time courses of the cartridge conveyor displacement, feeding device driven levers and ramming device driven shaft revolutions are analyzed as the main parts of the autoloader. The torque of the cartridge conveyor is measured by a strain gauge and the signal is transferred wirelessly to the data logger. The measurement results proved suitability of published method to be used to verify model calculations and to identify the input parameters for calculations. The analyses were proposed due to absence of appropriate technical documentation and for educational purposes. The findings are expected to be applicable for further technological modifications of the 73 mm cannon loading device to extend its operational time in case of upgrading.
