Effect of anaerobic digestion on the high rate of nitritation, treating piggery wastewater

Jiyeol Im; Kyungik Gil

The amount of piggery wastewater as domestic livestock is increasing. The volume of piggery wastewater produced is less than the volume of other wastewaters, but piggery wastewater has a heavy impact on wastewater streams due to an extremely high concentration of nitrogen and COD. In this study, laboratory reactors were operated using piggery wastewater and the effluent of anaerobic digester from piggery wastewater plants. The purpose of this study was to induce the nitritation process, which is an economically advantageous nitrogen removal method that converts ammonium nitrogen into nitrite. The results showed that the effluent of anaerobic digester from piggery wastewater was more efficient than raw piggery wastewater in terms of inducing nitritation. It can be deduced that nitritation is largely affected by an organic fraction of piggery wastewater. It can also be concluded that a small amount of biodegradable organic matter in piggery wastewater is efficient in inducing nitritation.

Jeongtae Ha; Jiyeol Im; Kyungik Gil

This study was conducted to assess the removal characteristics of taste and odor causing compounds(2-MIB and geosmin) and micro organic matters. GAC and BAC process consisting of Ozone/AOP and activated carbon was applied. As a result, the influent concentration of 2-MIB 159 ng/L and geosmin 371 ng/L were removed 42% and 86% by ozone 1.0 mg/L, and 58%, 90% by AOP(ozone 1.0 mg/L + H2O2 0.5 mg/L). Also it showed less than 2 ng/L effluent in GAC process and 99.8% removal efficiency in BAC process. Therefore, BAC process combining ozone/AOP and GAC is effective for persistent removal of micro organic matters, taste and odor. It is needed for optimization of Ozone/AOP process according to influent concentrations.

Changes of Treatment Efficiency According to Seasonal Variation in Rural Area

Jiyeol Im; Kyungik Gil

The Korean government has made progress in its project for sewage distribution in rural areas to ensure the balanced development of the country and its water conservation system. The project for sewage distribution in rural areas was analyzed with the yearly operational results of municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP). The sewage characteristics of the MWTP in a rural area changed according to seasonal variations, and the lowest pollution concentrations were obtained in the summer. The treatment efficiency of nutrients in the biological treatment process changed slightly more than the treatment efficiency of organic compounds, and the lowest treatment efficiency was obtained in winter. In addition, the relationship between treatment efficiency and retention time and F/M ratio showed similar results despite seasonal variations. It was considered that sewage characteristics and treatment efficiency changed according to seasonal variations when the treatment process was selected in MWTPs in rural areas. Especially, Maintenance of MWPT is need for the stable treatment efficiency of nutrients in the winter.

Analysis of laboratory scale nitriation reactor using sludge thickener supernatant

Jiyeol Im; Kyungik Gil

Nitrogen is one of main causes to induce eutrophication of water system and one of contaminants that must be treated for protection of water system. In this study, it was intended to identify a method to increase operation efficiency of municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP) by treating high concentration nitrogen. A laboratory scale reactor was operated by using sludge thickener supernatant in the MWTP. During operation of the laboratory scale reactor, it was intended to induce stable nitritation and analyze effects of related operation factors. As results, it was shown that the nitiritation could be induced artificially through control of retention time and sections where the stable nitiritation was induced were identified also. In particular, highly efficient nitrite conversion efficiency near 90% was identified in condition of 1 day retention time. Especially, it was shown that ammonium nitrogen load affected ammonium nitrogen removal efficiency and nitrite conversion efficiency. In the condition of high ammonium nitrogen load, the nitrite conversion efficiency and the ammonium nitrogen removal efficiency decreased. On the contrary in the condition of low ammonium nitrogen load, it was found that the nitrite conversion efficiency decreased. It means that control of ammonium nitrogen concentration and its retention time is needed for the nitritation. It is considered that for the sewage containing high load nitrogen in sludge treatment process as like the sludge thickener supernatant, the nitritation can be applied, which can be suggested as a modification method of MWTP.

Jiyeol Im; Kyungik Gil

Supply of rural community sewage treatment plant (RCSTP) is need for protect of water quality like water source and development of agriculture areas. In this study conducted analysis on characteristics of RCSTP sewage and treatment efficiency of installed treatment process using operation results of RCSTP in an-dong area. high organic matter and nutrient were contained in RCSTP sewage of an-dong than urban area. RCSTP treatment process in an-dong was shown stable treatment efficiency. But nutrient treatment efficiency was shown more sensitive result about SRT and F/M ratio than organic matter treatment efficiency. And RCSTP treatment process in an-dong was shown higher treatment efficiency than other treatment proces like A/O, SBR and media. Thus, this process is effective treatment process for application of RCSTP.

characteristic of foaming in nitritation reactor using anaerobic digester supernatant and livestock wastewater

Jiyeol Im; Kyungik Gil

It has been known that sewage containing high-concentration nitrogen affects the efficiency of municipal wastewater treatment plants harmfully. Therefore, research has been actively conducted to treat sewage containing high-concentration nitrogen. The current study has analyzed organic compounds, conducted foaming tests, and operated a laboratory-level nitritation reactor with the subjects of anaerobic digester supernatant and livestock wastewater which are the typical kinds of sewage containing high-concentration nitrogen. According to the results of analyzing organic compounds, soluble inert components form the largest part of anaerobic digester supernatant while particle biodegradable components occupy the most part of livestock wastewater. About the retention time proper for the reaction of nitritation, anaerobic digester supernatant shows 2 days while livestock wastewater indicates 6 days. It seems that the difference in the proper retention time is resulted from the difference of properties in organic compounds and ammonium nitrogen concentration. In addition, livestock wastewater`s reactor foam is generated comparatively more than anaerobic digester supernatant`s, but it tends to be eliminated faster. It is expected that the findings of this study can be utilized as foundational data afterwards in applying the reaction of nitritation to municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Analysis of RCSTP Wastewater Characteristics and Installed Treatment Process in Bong-Hwa Gun

Jiyeol Im; Kyungik Gil

Rural area sewage distribution rate is 40 % less than urban area. Previous research results announced that one of the reason in water resource pollution was caused of low rural area sewage distribution rate. Analysis on operation result of 11 RCSTP in Bong-hwa area which is located at the upper region of An-dong Dam and Im-ha Dam. Based on operation result, an analysis on characteristics of wastewater in Bong-hwa and treatment efficiency of installed treatment process was conducted. The wastewater influent of Bong-hwa contained high organic matter and nutrient than those of urban area. Treatment process showed totally stable treatment efficiency. But, The treatment efficiency for nutrient showed high fluctuation. This result means which is need to operation condition control of nutrient treatment when operating RCSTP.

Long Term Operation of Laboratory Nitritation Reactor Using Anaerobic Digester Supernatant of Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant and Piggery Wastewater

Kyungik Gil; Jiyeol Im

In this study, the laboratory scale reactor was operated for high strength ammonium nitrogen in anaerobic digestion supernatant and piggery wastewater through nitritation that is an innovative process of nitrogen removal. From the laboratory scale reactor for about 970 days, a stable nitritation was induced, and the operation factor of induced was analysed nitritation. As a result, a stable nitritation could be successfully induced from anaerobic digestion supernatant and piggery wastewaters. It appeared that nitritation wasn`t affected seriously within the range of pH, Alkalinity and COD in influent. In case of SRT, it found that nitrite conversion rate was changed according to SRT condition change, so it showed that SRT had effected on nitritation. In addition, compared to ammonium nitrogen removal, it clearly revealed that nitrite conversion rates more sensitive to SRT. The conclusion in this study, it could be used as an important data when applying nitritation to municipal wastewater treatment plants(MWTPs).

Nitritation at Various Temperature Conditions - Using Anaerobic Digester Supernatant

Kyungik Gil; Jiyeol Im

As the effluent quality standard of the municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP) has been strengthened, the treatment of the recycle water containing high concentration of ammonium nitrogen has been considered as one of retrofit methods for upgrading the exising MWTPs. In this study, nitritation, economic nitrogen removal process, was induced by laboratory-scale reactor at the , , and temperature conditions using anaerobic digester supernatant. The stable nitritation was achieved over , but nitrification was induced at . It means that the nitritation was affected by SRT and temperature. SRT, demanded for nitritation, is changed according to the temperature. Therefore, it is considered that SRT and temperature are important factors in nitritation. Also, it is approved that inducing the ammonium nitrogen removal and the nitritation are more beneficial over . The conclusion of this study can be used for the important basic reference when nitritation process is applied for MWTPs.

Changes of COD fraction According to Nitritation Using Piggery Wastewater

Kyungik Gil; Jiyeol Im

Abstract To remove high strength ammonium nitrogen in piggery wastewater through stable nitritation and to analyze nitrite conversionrate under the change of operating condition, laboratory scale reactor was operated with stable nitritation process. As the result, itis observed that nitritation is sensitively affected by SRT. Also, the organic matters in the influent and effluent of laboratory scalereactor were classified according to microbial respirometric method. In the organic matter contained in the raw piggery waste-water, Xs is the most part. But effluent of anaerobic digester form piggery wastewater, S I is the most part. In case of effluent oflaboratory scale reactor, it is observed that the property of the organic matter fraction in the effluent is being changed according toammonia removal rate and nitrite conversion rate. Through multiple correlation analysis, this finding also would be important datato predict the property of organic matters fraction in piggery wastewater through nitritation process.Key words : nitritation, nitrite, piggery wastewater, COD fraction, OUR test
