Dengue prevention at the household level: preliminary evaluation of a mesh cover for flowerpot saucers

Virgínia Torres Schall; Héliton da Silva Barros; João Bosco Jardim; Nágila Francinete Costa Secundino; Paulo Filemon Paolucci Pimenta

The effectiveness of a polyester mesh cover (evidengue®), aimed at preventing the access of female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to flowerpot saucers, was evaluated in laboratory. Two saucers of flowerpot with water were individually wrapped with the cover was placed with their respective pots in two entomological cages. One identical set of flowerpot and saucer was placed in a third cage. In each cage, 20 gravid females, fed on mouse blood, were released. Results show that the cover was effective to prevent access of females. Further tests are necessary to assess cover effectiveness as a device to prevent saucer oviposition. The effectiveness of a polyester mesh cover (evidengue), aimed at preventing the access of female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to flowerpot saucers, was evaluated in laboratory.

It is suggested that the diffusion of scientific articles can be studied in terms of relationships that take place between a class of behaviours associated with the article citation and the social media which stimulate this class verbally. This suggestion assumes that the diffusion does not concern the article, but the relationships between this specific class and their verbal antecedents and consequents in the social media pertinent to those making the citation. The role of interpersonal relationships in controlling the diffusion of scientific articles by rules and information networks is highlighted. It is argued that a framework which conceptualizes the diffusion of scientific papers as processes such as social learning, induction and stimulus control may favour the research of the theme not only by behavioural psychologists and information scientists, but also by researchers and professionals from other areas.
