The maturity models are instruments to facilitate organizational management, including the management of its information systems function. These instruments are used also in hospitals. The objective of this article is to identify and compare the maturity models for management of information systems and technologies (IST) in healthcare. For each maturity model, it is identified the methodology of development and validation, as well as the scope, stages and their characteristics by dimensions or influence factors. This study resulted in the need to develop a maturity model based on a holistic approach. It will include a comprehensive set of influencing factors to reach all areas and subsystems of health care organizations.

Maturity models are tools that favour the management of organizations, including their information systems management task, and hospital organizations are no exception. In the present paper we put forth a preliminary investigation aimed at the development of an encompassing maturity model for the management of hospital information systems. The development of this model is justified to the extent that current maturity models in the field of hospital information systems management are still in an early development stage, and especially because they are poorly detailed, do not provide tools to determine the maturity stage nor structure the characteristics of maturity stages according to different influencing factors.

Abstract This article presents the first phase of a research project whose purpose is to introduce a new form of collaboration and communication between the school and the family through an Electronic Booklet (EB). The EB was developed due to the increasing necessity of collaboration between the school and the family, promoting the teaching-learning process and educational success, supported by information and communication technologies. These conclusions and justifications were derived from a survey based in a questionnaire applied to guardians and teachers of several private and public Portuguese schools of the primary and secondary education level. Both groups – guardians and teachers stressed the importance of communication between school and family and expressed interest in the EB as a communication tool. The analysis of the survey results made possible the construction of an Electronics Booklet prototype.

The maturity models are facilitating instruments of organizational management, including the management of information systems (IS) function, not being execption hospital organizations. This article presents a study conducted with a group of experts from the field of the Hospital Information Systems (HIS) to identify the main influence factors that should be present in a comprehensive maturity model for the management of HIS. The development of this model takes place within a doctoral project and is justified to the extent that current maturity models in the field of HIS management are still in an early development stage, and especially because they are poorly detailed, do not provide tools to determine the maturity stage nor structure the characteristics of maturity stages according to different influencing factors.

Maturity models facilitate organizational management, including information systems management, with hospital organizations no exception. This article puts forth a study carried out with a group of experts in the field of hospital information systems management with a view to identifying the main influencing factors to be included in an encompassing maturity model for hospital information systems management. This study is based on the results of a literature review, which identified maturity models in the health field and relevant influencing factors. The development of this model is justified to the extent that the available maturity models for the hospital information systems management field reveal multiple limitations, including lack of detail, absence of tools to determine their maturity and lack of characterization for stages of maturity structured by different influencing factors.

Maturity Models have been introduced, over the last four decades, as guides and references for Information System (IS) management in organizations from different sectors of activity. In the healthcare field, Maturity Models have also been used to deal with the enormous complexity and demand of Hospital Information Systems (HIS). The present paper introduces a maturity model baptized as HISMM, which includes six stages of HIS growth and maturity progression. The HISMM has the peculiarity of congregating a set of key maturity Influence Factors and respective characteristics, enabling not only the assessment of the global maturity of a HIS but also the individual maturity of its different dimensions.

In the last five decades, maturity models have been introduced as reference frameworks for Information System (IS) management in organizations within different industries. In the healthcare domain, maturity models have also been used to address a wide variety of challenges and the high demand for hospital IS (HIS) implementations. The increasing volume of data, is exceeded the ability of health organizations to process it for improving clinical and financial efficiencies and quality of care. It is believed that careful and attentive use of Data Analytics (DA) in healthcare can transform data into knowledge that can improve patient outcomes and operational efficiency. A maturity model in this conjuncture, is a way of identifying strengths and weaknesses of the HIS maturity and thus, find a way for improvement and evolution. This paper presents a proposal to measure Hospitals Information Systems maturity with regard to DA. The outcome of this paper is a maturity model, which includes six stages of HIS growth and maturity progression.

A preliminary analysis to the individual student process (ISP) allowed to detect difficulties and delays in its access far beyond the desirable. It was also noted that not always the interested parties had access to the information required. This, obviously, was one of the reasons that motivated the investigation related to student’s academic registration process course throughout compulsory education, in Portuguese and foreign schools. The idea, here presented and discussed — automation of Individual Student Process accessible through cloud computing — has clearly become essential to ease the consultation of this registry, simplifying the information circulation among all participants (schools, students, parents, teachers and institutions) simultaneously reducing bureaucracy in educational transitions inside and outside Portugal.

Abstract A preliminary analysis of the Individual Student Process (ISP) allowed the detection of difficulties and delays in its access by schools, students, parents, teachers and institutions. Knowing that student success in school substantially depends on the interpersonal supervising of the family, school, and community, access problems make it difficult to be aware of student progress in a timely manner. These limitations were the primary motivator for the initial research and the project presented here – Automation of Individual Student Process accessible through cloud computing – proved to be highly efficient with respect to the quality of the communication between stakeholders, and in diminishing bureaucracy in educational transitions inside and out Portugal.
