The Pitfalls of Psychologism

Joel Kovel

I was pleased to see Robert Heilbroners review of Eli Sagans At the Dawn of Tyranny in the September issue of MR. Sagans book is an important one, which raises many key issues about what may be broadly considered the subjective side of domination—issues which rarely get the attention they deserve from socialists. But these are difficult issues as well; and it is precisely because of that difficulty that I would have hoped for a more thorough treatment than Heilbroners. As his review stands, it gives the impression of uncritically accepting certain very problematic assumptions made by Sagan. While I cannot here do justice to these matters—or to the overall scope of Sagans work—I would like to suggest a few of the problems Heilbroner did not engage. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.

A Serious Flaw in Kovel; A Response to W. H. Locke Anderson; A Reply to Joel Kovel

William A. Reuben; Joel Kovel; W. H. Locke Anderson

To disagree with a review in Monthly Review by its Associate Editor of a book that is dedicated to Paul Sweezy and Harry Magdoff (and to Alger Hiss) is not a task to be taken lightly. But, in as comradely a spirit as I can muster, I would like to take issue with W. H. Locke Andersons review (MR, May 1994) of Joel Kovels Red Hunting in the Promised Land. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.

Remembering Ralph Miliband

Joel Kovel

The death of Ralph Miliband after a long suffering deprives the socialist world of one of its leading voices. A bastion of integrity, of intellectual power and moral intensity, of lucidity, of hope and eloquence has been taken down. The loss to those who knew and loved him is incalculable; so, too, is the loss to his students, to the Socialist Register he guided so brilliantly, and to those other radical causes to which he gave himself. More on the Origins of Tyranny; Reply to Sagan

Eli Sagan; Joel Kovel

I write in response to Joel Kovels serious and thoughtful rejoinder to Robert Heilbroners review of my book At the Dawn if Tyranny (MR, October 1986). My first task, it appears, is to make clear what my views of social development are. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
