Competitiveness of broiler producers in north america under alternative free trade scenarios

Won W. Koo; Joel T. Golz

A spatial equilibrium model was developed to evaluate optimal production and trilateral trade flows of broiler meat under alternative free trade policies in the North American market. The United States has a competitive advantage over Canada and Mexico in producing broiler meat. Canadas import quota and Mexicos import license protect broiler producers in each country from US competition. Eliminating these trade policies under NAFTA could increase US broiler production and increase US broiler meat exports to Canada and Mexico. An appreciation of the US dollar relative to the Canadian dollar and Mexican peso would have a greater impact on trade between the United States and Mexico than on trade between the United States and Canada. ©1994 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Competitiveness of the World Durum Wheat and Durum Milling Industries under alternative trade policies

Won W. Koo; Joel T. Golz; Seung Ryong Yang

A spatial equilibrium model was developed to evaluate optimal production and distribution of durum wheat for milling and export under alternative trade policies. This study found that the US and Canadian FTA will benefit US durum producers more than Canadian producers. The EEP is important in maintaining US market shares in the world market and the ERP is important for France. Canadian market shares increase when either the EEP or the ERP is eliminated. This study also found that the competitiveness of the milling industry is less sensitive to changes in trade policies than that of the durum wheat industry.
