Abstract. A regression of tumour growth is observed when alkoxyglycerols are administered prior to radiation treatment of patients suffering from cancer of the uterine cervix. This regression has been demonstrated by a change in the quotient between the incidence of early and advanced stages.

A regression of tumor growth is observed when alkoxyglycerols are administered prior to radiation treatment of patients suffering from cancer of the uterine cervix. This regression is remarkably higher for patients below the age of 60 years than for those over 60. The regression has been demonstrated by a change in the quotient between the incidence of early and advanced stages.

A report is given on 48 patients, 34 of whom underwent surgery with halothane anaesthesia and 14 with ether anaesthesia. Both groups displayed significant increases in OCT activity in serum 4‐7 days after the operation. GOT and GPT in serum were analysed in 17 of the halothane and in eight of die ether cases. GOT was significantly increased after 24 hours and GPT after 4‐7 days. No significant differences were found between the serum enzyme (OCT, GOT, GPT) levels of the two groups on any of the postoperative days studied (days 1, 4, 7 and 10).

In order to study whether halothane has any liver toxicity, the activity of the liver‐specific enzyme ornithine carbamoyl transferase (OCT) and the enzymes glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) were followed in 15 patients given halothane anaesthesia. A similar study was made of four patients given ether anaesthesia and five given spinal anaesthesia.

Possible liver disturbances were investigated in 127 women using oral contraceptives. The pills were Anovlar (ethinylestradiol .05 mg norethisterone 4 mg) Conluten (mestranol .1 mg norethisterone 2 mg) Enavid Mite (mestranol .075 mg norethynodrel 5 mg) and Lyndiol Mite (mestranol .075 mg lynestrenol 2.5 mg). The 5 cases of itching and fatigue (2 with icterus) had high serum ornithine carbamoyl transferase (S-OCT) levels. Symptoms disappeared 1 month after end of treatment. If the itching was due to retention of bile acids as a result of a liver effect then 4% of the 127 had clinically relevant effects on the liver. By 6 months after start of treatment 19 had discontinued use because of side effects and 6 due to fear of side effects or desire for pregnancy. The 102 women followed throughout the study (12 months) were from 18-47 years old. These women had a slight rise in serum alkaline phosphatase after 1 month (p less than .05). No significant changes were detected in bilirubin thymol turbidity or lactic dehydrogenase in the serum. The average levels of S-OCT after 1 3 6 and 12 months were all significantly higher than the initial level with p less than .001 .001 .01 and .05 respectively. S-GOT and S-GPT also showed significant rises after 1 month (p .001) and then drops. The transient rise in S-OCT appears attributable to increased synthesis of the enzyme and/or mitochondrial changes. Women treated with oral contraceptives with recent liver injuries or current liver-disturbance symptoms should have S-OCT analyses.
