A charging device for charging a rechargeable battery (2), comprising first means (10, 4, 16) for the supply of charging current to the battery (2), second means (4, 16) for terminating the supply of charging current when the battery (2) reaches an end temperature which is higher than an initial temperature of the battery (2) at the beginning of the supply of charging current, and third means (18..58) for determining in which temperature range of a plurality of at least two given temperature ranges the initial temperature lies and for selecting the end temperature in dependence upon the instantaneous temperature range thus determined.
