Abstract This report gives an overview on ZrO 2 automotive exhaust gas sensors, the development steps of thimble-type oxygen sensors and the technology and design of planar-type oxygen sensors. Furthermore, advanced exhaust gas sensor systems, catalyst monitoring sensors and future developments are described.

Mit der Ankundigung strenger gesetzlicher Vorschriften fur Abgaswerte von Ottomotoren in den USA im Jahre 1970, wurden die Versuche zur Gemischregelung mit Hilfe von ZrO2-Lambda-Sonden intensiviert. Seit dem Serienanlauf im Jahre 1976 wurden wesentliche Fortschritte sowohl bei der Lambda-Sonde (z.B. Bleiresistenz, Potentialfreiheit, Tauchfestigkeit, Startverhalten, Standzeiten etc.), bei den Gemischbildungs- und Regelungssystemen (z.B. intermittierende, sequentielle Einspritzung, adaptive Vorsteuerung etc.), als auch in der Katalysatortechnik (z B Konvertierungsrate, Standzeit etc.) erreicht.

These signals are used in control and regulation functions by the control units in the engine-management, safety and comfort and convenience systems. Various measuring concepts are applied, depending on the task.
