N-nitrosamine formation from atrazine.

N. Lee Wolfe; Richard G. Zepp; John A. Gordon; Robert C. Fincher

ConclusionsPrevious studies have focused on N-nitroso derivatives of relatively non-persistent pesticides or pesticides that form unstable N-nitroso derivatives. We feel that more persistent pesticides or their degradative products capable of forming N-nitroso derivatives should be investigated. Also pathways of degradation, both chemical and biological, should be elucidated.

Kinetic investigation of malathion degradation in water.

N.L. Wolfe; Richard G. Zepp; George L. Baughman; John A. Gordon

Malathion exhibits considerable biological selectivity and has been the subject of many comparative biological studies. The kinetics of microbial degradation of malathion by aquatic organisms has been reported by PARIS et al. (2), and a kinetic study in soils has been carr-~ed--out by KONRAD et al. However, there are no available data ~-n t-he literature describing the kinetics of malathion degradation in water.

Chemistry of methylmercurials in aqueous solution

N.L. Wolfe; Richard G. Zepp; John A. Gordon; George L. Baughman

Abstract The kinetics of acid cleavage of dimethylmercury (DMM) was studied in aqueous solution. At 25°C and pH 5, DMM has an acidolysis half-life of about 33 years. Cleavage of dimethylmercury by mercuric species is pH-dependent and is slow at the concentrations of mercuric species in solution in the aquatic environment. Dimethylmercury and methylmercuric ion do not undergo sunlight photodegradation. The evaporative loss of dimethylmercury from water can be compared with oxygen diffusion based on the ratio of transfer constants.
