The congenital eyelid syndrome.

Lewis; M. S. Arons; John B. Lynch

A group of abnormalities of the orbital structures associated with ptosis are described as a single syndrome. These include: (1) bilateral ptosis, (2) epicanthus, (3) palpebral phimosis, (4) questionable deficiency of upper and lower eyelid tissue, (5) elevation of the eyebrows and (6) absent supraorbital rims with absent nasoglabellar angle. In addition to canthoplasty and correction of the ptosis, inert implant materials are recommended for reconstruction of the supraorbital region and nasoglabellar angle to restore the cosmetic defect and to secondarily assist the frontalis in elevating the upper lid by providing a fulcrum and improving its mechanical advantage.
