Extrinsic laryngeal carcinoma: A clinical evaluation of 124 cases

Knowles B. Lawrence; F.James Rybka; Joseph E. Murray; John D. Constable

Abstract One hundred twenty-four patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Boston had primary carcinoma located in the zone of the extrinsic larynx. Thirty-five of these, with lesions judged to be inoperable, received external irradiation only. Considerable palliation was achieved in these cases, but there were no cures. Simple laryngectomy usually failed to cure because of a very high incidence of later nodal metastases. Radical laryngectomy with simultaneous neck dissection was performed in seventy-one patients and yielded the best results with a 25 per cent gross three year survival rate.

A surgeon returns to Vietnam

John D. Constable

Abstract A return visit to Vietnam 5 years after the end of the war shows a grave lack of medical facilities and supplies; however, those left from 1975 are being optimally utilized with greatly expanded personnel. The efforts expended in Vietnam by American physicians and the United States government have not been wasted.
