Our purpose here is to present a general demographic profile of rural America. This profile is not meant to be exhaustive; for example, a discussion of changes in demographic characteristics, or causes of such changes, is not included. However, this profile will provide the reader with basic information necessary for an adequate understanding of rural America. Questions answered will include: How many people live in rural America? What proportion of rural Americans are farmers? Geographically speaking, where do rural Americans live? How well educated are rural Americans? What kind of jobs do rural Americans have? How much money do they make? Are there any differences in educational levels, jobs, and income levels among rural whites, blacks, and Hispanics?
