The Environment and Technical Education in the United Kingdom.

John F. Potter

In showing that substantially more than three-quarters of the population of England and Wales at some stage in their career receive education or training in the further education sector, the author advocates the case for environmental education to be extensively developed at this educational level. An expanded programme in technical and allied colleges should contain elements of environmental education for nearly all technicians as well as specialist full-time training schemes for persons such as environmental monitoring technicians.

A more positive environmental outlook

John F. Potter

On matters environmental, Norman Myers is a recognised, prolific, exciting and concerned writer. He is also a stirring speaker and a recent public delivery of his is included, in slightly edited form as a Guest Editorial in this Volume (Myers, 1994). Appropriately for the ears of young graduates, Professor Myers chose to develop the all too familiar theme of a worldwide bleak environmental outlook into an upbeat opportunity for inspired environmental challenge. On a quick reflection, environmental literature would seem to persistently intimate or proclaim that our planet is rapidly approaching an ultimate state o f un iversa l , e n v i r o n m e n t a l degradat ion. Sensationalist articles on species extinction, famine, pollution, resource depletion, despoliation, etc., leap immediately to ones recollection (see Potter, 1993). But, as I write, the sun shines in a clear sky, the birds sing on this crisp Spring morning and even young rabbits have returned to my lawn after years of

Icelandic Geology: an explanatory excursion guide based on a 1986 field meeting

Michael Bamlett; John F. Potter

Iceland is probably the product of irregular diapiric upwelling from the lower mantle, beginning about 55 Ma, gradually producing a pile of sub-aqueous and subaerial lavas, the outcrop examples of which date from early Miocene (c. 16 Ma) to the present (most recent, 1984) (Vogt, 1974). Most older (Tertiary) lavas are in the east and west of the country, on the outer edges of the active rifting zones which mark the line of the mid-Atlantic ridge. This excursion guide examines particularly the rifting zones in which there are many active volcanic centres. From these, lavas of a wide range of mineralogy have been extruded, often beneath ice or water, resulting in a wide variety of rock types and landforms. Changes in sea-level and the removal of the almost total ice cover (about 10,000 years ago) have resulted in a geomorphologically young landscape. The highest areas (generally those above 1000 m O.D.) remain covered by ice caps, from which glaciers encroach on to lower ground in many places. Geothermal water and hydro-electric power are available in abundance and these help to offset the relative paucity of other economic resources. The areas visited by the 1986 party are described and, where necessary, explained, with the aim of assisting any future travellers along the same route.

Don't go home without it — Cultivating the anti-litter Ethic

John F. Potter

Whilst motoring over some of Australias more remote outback roads, one might encounter another vehicle perhaps once every 100 km and human habitation no more frequently. People are uncommonly sparse. But slow down a little and turn your attention from the grand expansive scenery to the immediate roadside - an unpleasant shock awaits. Australians in the more arid parts of the outback are aware that liquid intake is essential, they take their fluids with them. Their empty soft beverage, alcohol and water containers are discarded in profusion (Table 1), for the human race has passed this way. Australian road verges, revealing up to one unwanted glass or metal drinks container every five metres, are nor exceptional. My travels suggest that the problem is almost universal (Potter, 1989), and others might like to judge their own verges. The counts in Table 1 were made by two people (one viewing each verge) from a slowly moving (but not stopping) car. This remains relatively unscientific and, of course, not an exact reflection, for many ejected containers are hidden from the view of the occupants of the passing car. In certain parts of Australia, USA and elsewhere, local community collection parties sally

Gardens for the third millennium: The Garden of Eden to urban paradise

Maria Luisa Cohen; John F. Potter

Over the period 15th]18th October, 1998, a conference was held at the Sala Romanica of the Basilica of St Francis, Assisi in Italy; it was hosted by the Franciscan Orders and organised by the Assisi Nature Council with the co-operation of the Department of Agrarian Studies of the University of Perugia. The theme of the conference was the future of European gardens and its aim was to generate awareness of the importance of urban green spaces inclusive of parks, botanic and historic gardens, commons and vacant city plots. Such a theme draws on an ancient tradition which goes back to the archetypal Garden of Eden: a tradition shared by the Mediterranean civilisations, the crossroads for different cultures and an inspiration for all that subsequently has followed. The conference celebrated the garden as a Ž form of Western art and the participants British, Italian, French, German, Portuguese and Span. ish were some of the best minds in the fields of garden history, botany, ethnobotany, landscape planning and design, environmental education and biodiversity. With the aim of making a valuable contribution to the quality of life in the 21st century, the participants agreed to issue the following statement.
