because he finds himself without the strength necessary to meet successfully the problem of suffering, to vanquish concupiscence, and to resist the temptations of the devil. Concupiscence can, therefore, be called the material element in the state of original sin, because by drawing men towards creatures it impedes the will from turning to God. And the formal element of this state is the absence of this conversion of the will to God. This state of culpable moral weakness makes the child of Adam unworthy of Gods friendship as well as positively indisposed to receive grace. But if man is the son of the first sinful Adam, he is likewise the brother of the second Adam, with whom he shares a common humanity. This oneness with Christ transforms his misery into a title to Gods help and to integration into the world redeemed by Christ, if only he consents to be reborn in Christ.

plan of infinite wisdom pointing out the true and only path toward the possession of God, whose revealed Word defines Himself as charity (1 Jn 4:7); that moral living which is in accord with Gods will can never consist in mere external observance of law and can never be effectively carried out except in our grace-inspired response to the outpourings of Trinitarian Ufe and love, the unique source and only goal of all Christian morality.

general, as found in Sacred Scripture and as distinguished from the virtues. The second deals with the gifts in particular, and has an appendix that gives further consideration to the gift of fear. The third part treats of the number of the gifts and their properties, of the beatitudes and fruits. For the sake of clarity many of the paragraphs of the sections have been rearranged. A general index, an index of proper names, and an index to scriptural references add considerably to the utility of the work. Some readers may wish that the publisher had chosen to use larger type.
