There are now more than 50 diseases and syndromes classified as STDs ( Csonka and Oates1990 , Youngkin1995 ). While new conditions, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, are being added to the list of STDs, other conditions, such as gonorrhoea, remain constant threats to public health.
