Decay scheme of 123Cs

Abstract The decay scheme of 123Cs has been studied via the decay of its precursor 123Ba produced in heavy ion bombardments of natural indium. The 123Cs isotope decays with a T 1 2 =5.6 min via electron capture and beta decay (Emax = 2.6 MeV) to the 98 keV first excited state and ground. state of 123Xe. The 98 keV transition has a K-conversion coefficient of 0.80. The lifetime of the 98 keV state is ≦13 nsec. The positon-to-K-capture ratio for the excited state transition is 1.98.

Measuring Difficult Reaction Rates Involving Radioactive Beams: A New Approach

Rates of sub-barrier, radiative capture reactions involving radioactive reactants, needed for understanding various astrophysical explosive scenarios, are often quite difficult to measure directly at relevant stellar temperatures. In general relatively intense radioactive beams (>10/s) are needed for these inverse kinematic studies, as cross sections are very low. A new production approach is described herein that would supply such required intensities in a relatively straightforward fashion. While this system may have many applications, one area could be increasing our understanding of classical novae and X-ray bursts.
