The IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) standard is being widely adopted by both wireline and wireless service providers to support the next wave of multimedia communication applications. As currently defined, that IMS standard proposes a detailed architecture for the transport and control layers of the next-generation telecommunication networks, but leaves many questions unanswered on how the application layer should be structured. A more structured approach to service delivery will be required in order to deliver new multi-media applications in an efficient and cost-effective way. An approach based on service delivery platform (SDP) proposes a layered service architecture, with a strong emphasis on re-use of common service enablers and on open APIs. This paper describes work being undertaken within HPs IMS Experience Center to validate a horizontal service delivery architecture for next-generation IP multimedia applications.

The paper describes experiences in designing and implementing a groupware application (a shared whiteboard) on four different distribution infrastructures. We describe the application and how its design was influenced by reliability requirements. We review the four platforms and discuss the useful, and not so useful, features of each platform.
The Convergence of Telecom and Internet on Evolution of Telecommunication Services - Volume 7768 | 2013
John O'connell
Telecom services and internet services have traditionally been deployed using very different service architectures, conforming to different sets of industry standards. With the evolution of the network infrastructure to NGN and with the migration of both IT and telecom services to the cloud, there is an increasing harmonization of service architectures and an increasing adoption of IT technology within telecom environments. In this chapter, we describe how standardization activities in the IT industry have helped to transform the internet into a global service infrastructure and how a combination of standard technologies, open APIs and common platforms has helped to drive the growth of web services. We also highlight some of the emerging standards and platforms that are shaping the mobile application and cloud computing spaces.
