Abstract An external muon identifier to aid in the identification of muons produced in neutrino interactions in the Fermilab 15 ft bubble chamber has been constructed. Details of design and analysis procedures are discussed. The spatial resolution and efficiency have been calibrated using muons regenerated by neutrino interactions in material upstream of the bubble chamber. A formalism to describe the statistical significance of muon matches in the identifier is developed and tested using tracks from actual neutrino interactions.

Delay Line Proportional Chambers for the Fermilab External Muon Identifier

Sherwood Parker; John Orthel; John P. Marriner

Thirty nine, one meter square proportional chambers with delay line readout have been constructed for the external muon identifier of the Fermilab 15 foot bubble chamber. 1 They provide X, Y, U(45°) and T (avalanche time) information using a single wire plane, etched strip cathodes and nine amplifiers. They have a time resolution of ±27ns, single particle spatial resolution of ±2 to ±3mm and double particle resolution of ~2 1/2 to 4cm. The energy accessable to each wire is limited so none of the wires in the first 25 chambers has broken since their installation in 1973-4.

Several events have been observed in neutrino interactions which have an e+ and a K°s decay in the final state along with the conventional μ−. A discussion of their detection and relation to dimuon events will be presented. The significance of the associated strange particles and related kinematic quantities will be discussed.

Abstract We report observation of a neutrino (antineutrino)-induced event with two electrons, one positron, one positively charged muon, a neutral K meson, and seven gammas in an experiment performed in the FNAL 15-ft. bubble chamber with a 47% atomic mixture of neon in hydrogen. Estimated experimental electron backgrounds are ∼10 −4 per track. At present we have no plausible interpretation of this event.
