This first national study of informatics in Colombia presents the contemporary situation and recommendations for the future. Also, this is the first comprehensive model for a single country in all of Latin America involving both business and higher education. The results of a national survey that evaluated the current status of the Colombian information society are presented. A paradigm of development is recom mended by the authors that might be replicated for other developing countries

This study researched knowledge and skills being taught in beginning microbiology courses in Texas colleges. The knowledge and skills were determined by sending questionnaires to Texas junior/community and senior college teachers of microbiology. Information gathered established 142 common elements (knowledge and skills students need before taking upper level microbiology courses) that were agreed on by the senior college faculty. The information gathered was also used to determine if any differences exist in the depth of coverage between the two groups of teachers. This study reveals differences in depth of coverage in 79 out of 179 curricular items surveyed.

Abstract An empirical examination of accredited American higher education institutions was conducted to obtain baseline data regarding distance education copyright, intellectual property, and antitrust concerns. Additionally, a multiple‐case study involving ten of the top thirty accredited distance education institutions in America was conducted. Policy approaches were examined for all institutions, and differences were discussed between public and private institutions as well as between the following Carnegie Classification institutions: Research I and II, Doctorate I and II, and Masters I and II. Data indicated that, out of the schools surveyed, 22% of the institutions in these Carnegie Classification categories published copyright and intellectual property policies on their institutions Web site. In the case study, it was found that 90% of the institutions centrally controlled their distance education program administration as well as the copyright and intellectual property policies related to it.

AbstractThe corporate model has influenced the university model of administration in such a way that techniques such as management by objectives, strategic planning, and computer modeling and simulation have been applied on campuses since the early 1950s (Coleman, 1968). This paper deals with the application of one such technique to the field of higher education administration. The development of a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) simulation model can be considered as a segment of a proposal to develop an expert system for tutoring of prospective CEOs. The steps in the model development process are discussed. These include problem and/or information identification, data collection, model building, model validation, model implementation, and model operation. The advantages and disadvantages of this computer-assisted instruction tool for developing decision-making ability are pointed out in the conclusion.

As higher education becomes more intricate and with a growing shortage of funding, it must use its resources in an even more efficient manner. There is a growing awareness that student services professionals must think in terms of the whole university system and beyond when creating goals and evaluating their work. Consultation has been called the backbone of effective student services delivery systems; however, defining consultation needs is a necessary first step. This paper identifies and ranks the most important consultation needs of two‐ and four‐year institutions, determined by a statewide survey of student services professionals. Having determined the consultation needs in student services, next steps include defining consultation activities, clarifying consultation goals, preparing and training consultants, and utilizing existing consultation models or developing new ones.
