Abstract In a six-month period Salmonella kedougou was isolated from 20 people who were associated with the gastroenterology department of a large district general hospital. Although a common source was not identified, epidemiological evidence indicates that fibreoptic gastroscopes were vehicles of transmission.

Abstract Intravenous diazepam was compared with morphine as premedication for gastrointestinal endoscopy using fibreoptic instruments in a hundred consecutive patients. Patients having diazepam were more often drowsy or asleep during the examination, and 10 days later had either forgotten it or reported having found it less uncomfortable than those having morphine. Whatever the premedicaticn only 15% of patients found the examination more than a little uncomfortable. It is concluded that diazepam is a convenient and safe agent as premedication for gastrointestinal endoscopy and is preferred to morphine by most patients.
