The significance of 'participation' as an educational ideal in education for sustainable development and health education in schools

Jonas Lysgaard; Venka Simovska

This article examines the significance of the concept of participation for teacher meaning-making processes in education for sustainable development and health education. In Scandinavian public schools, education for sustainable development and health education focus on a wide palette of societal problems rather than on narrow curricula. Drawing on selected reviews of research literature on education for sustainable development and health education, Lacanian psychoanalysis provides inspiration for our analysis of the concept of participation, and how it is positioned and enacted in these fields of practice. Essentially, we argue that the concept of participation has a dual nature: it serves both as an educational ideal and as a teaching strategy. We also explore how the failure to achieve the ideal of ‘true’ participation may serve a positive purpose for the teacher; the acknowledgement that participation is not always as genuine as desired establishes a pedagogical situation where ideals of engaging pupils through true participation can continue to exist side by side with clear signs of a less consequential participation.

The roots and routes of environmental and sustainability education policy research – an introduction to a virtual special issue

Jonas Lysgaard; Alan Reid; Katrien Van Poeck

This article introduces the themes of a virtual special issue (VSI) of Environmental Education Research (http://explore.tandfonline.com/content/ed/ceer-vsi) focused on policy research in environmental and sustainability education (ESE). The broad purpose behind preparing the VSI was to consider the challenges involved in linking particular concepts of environment and sustainability with key themes in educational policy, and how this remains a heavily contested practice. Examples drawn from two decades of studies published in the journal show how these might be illustrated, addressed, problematized and possibly transcended. The introduction traces how ESE researchers have dealt with key trends, complexities and issues in the policy-practice-research nexus both conceptually and empirically. It also illustrates how researchers within the field might reimagine and reinvigorate policy research on ESE, and how working with researchers from other fields who offer different perspectives, ideas and expertise might aid the cross-fertilisation of a complex terrain of ideas, policy and practice. In so doing, we hope the accompanying VSI inspires renewed interest into the (at times, fickle) relationship between ESE, and the dual worlds of possibility and tension that take place both within, and surrounding, their fields of policy and research.

The Serious Play of Climate Change Negotiation

David Kronlid; Jonas Lysgaard

This chapter focuses primarily on the indirect role of Capabilities in influencing social change. The main aim of the chapter is to flesh out an underelaborated dimension of well-being in the climate change adaptation context: play as a Capability. We discuss whether certain activities at climate change summits, institutions that can both constrain and enable adaptation (Pelling 2011, 113), can be seen as play, and if so, what kind of playing and players the climate change summit game involves, and how different playing, and plays, may influence climate change adaptation.
