Designing a federated testbed as a distributed system

Traditionally, testbeds for networking and systems research have been stand-alone facilities: each is owned and operated by a single administrative entity, and is intended to be used independently of other testbeds. However, this isolated facility model is at odds with researchers’ ever-increasing needs for experiments at larger scale and with a broader diversity of network technologies. The research community will be much better served by a federated model. In this model, each federated testbed maintains its own autonomy and unique strengths, but all federates work together to make their resources available under a common framework.

PhantomNet: Research Infrastructure for Mobile Networking, Cloud Computing and Software-Defined Networking

The PhantomNet facility allows experimenters to combine mobile networking, cloud computing and software-defined networking in a single environment. It is an end-to-end testbed, meaning that it supports experiments not just with mobile end-user devices but also with a cellular core network that can be configured and extended with new technologies. This article introduces PhantomNet and presents a road map for its future development. The current PhantomNet prototype is available now at no cost to researchers and educational users.

Repeatable mobile networking research with phantomNet: demo

We will demonstrate features and capabilities of the PhantomNet testbed. PhantomNet is a mobile testbed, at the University of Utah, aimed at enabling a broad range of mobile networking related research. PhantomNet is remotely accessible and open to the mobile networking research community.
