Advanced PVR Architecture with Segment-based Time-Shift

Seong Yong Lim; Ji Hoon Choi; Joo Myoung Seok; Han-Kyu Lee

Though the benefits of personal video recorders (PVRs) with high performance cpu and large storages, consumers are navigating live contents time-independently as time-shift. In this paper, we proposed an advanced PVR architecture which has general PVR functions as well as metadata functions. A new video indexing method, known as segment-based time shift algorithm is introduced. To take full advantage of such algorithm, we also develop a PVR set-top-box (STB) with efficient GUI interface.

TV-Anytime based personalized bi-directional metadata service system

Jeong Hyun Yoon; Hee Kyung Lee; Joo Myoung Seok; Hui Yong Kim; Han-Kyu Lee

In this paper, TV-anytime standard based service system is proposed, which provides two personalized content services reflecting the users preference and terminal environment. One is a media library service and the other is a target advertisement service. Media library service is one for transmitting contents selected by user from consumable contents list provided by bi-directional metadata server. For content transmission, two methods-file download and streaming are supported and for a personalized service, it is provided that an adapted streaming service based on multimedia modality conversion technique according to a terminal type such as Set-Top Box and PDA and a usage environment such as network condition. Target advertisement service is one of main broadcast services for end-users, broadcasting stations and advertisers. In bidirectional metadata server, a user profile such as gender and age is reasoned from TV usage history based on TV-anytime standard and multistage classifier algorithm. By this result, targeted advertisement contents are transmitted to end-user

A path control architecture for receiving various multimedia contents

Seong Yong Lim; Joo Myoung Seok; Han-Kyu Lee

In converged network environment, demands for streaming video and audio over the Internet gains more and more popularity. Previous researches on real-time transmission are based on software IP protocol stacks and RTP protocol. The main contribution of this paper are: 1) a multimedia receiver architecture with hardware-base packet header process for broadcasting or multicasting media; 2) detail path sequence and algorithm of packet process: IP and TS packet header process, selection and separation of control and data messages; 3) a simulation model for measuring packet latency

An MPEG-4 based software video phone tolerant of Internet packet loss

Doug Young Suh; Joo Myoung Seok

The Internet has become the most popular network in spite of its weakness in real-time multimedia service provision. This paper describes how to enhance the quality of the real-time video service under the current Internet environments. It first investigates various factors related to the quality. It proposes efficient methods to minimize the impact of packet loss and jitter in the consideration of the requirements and limitations unique to software implementation of MPEG-4 video.

Tiled panoramic video transmission system based on MPEG-DASH

Seong Yong Lim; Joo Myoung Seok; Jeongil Seo; Tag Gon Kim

This paper presents a panoramic video transmission system using spatially divided tiles based on the spatial relationships descriptions of MPEG-DASH. The proposed server system provides tiling and encoding functionalities for ROI-based retrieving. Moreover, it guarantees the temporal and spatial synchronization when rendering multiple tiles by a deterministic tile size and intra-coded frames at the starting of all segments. Finally, we conduct a performance evaluation with panoramic videos at the eight HD-quality to show the feasibility of the tile-based transmission.

The design of Web-based return channel system in the data broadcast services

Joo Myoung Seok; Ji Hoon Choi; Jin Soo Choi

Increased interactivity is a general tendency for telecommunication services today, an aspect, which is also reflected in the more traditional distribution services like television. The broadcasting has been handicapped by the limited capacity of analog delivery and one-way delivery. In the transition to digital TV broadcasting infrastructures rapidly, all people want to experience new services such as interactive data broadcasting and to choose, sort, order, store and manipulate what they receive on their same terminal at home. Consequently, we propose the design of Web-based return channel system, which is so called WRCS. This is aim efficiently to manage many connections between STBs(terminal) and return channel system for interactions of many users, to handle multiple Java applications for dispersion and to create easily the various services like Web services. As a result of that, this becomes to mature as well as Web system, which has been stable, verified and powerful technology. And if it is developed by using Web technologies, it is possible to establish interactive return channel system shortly. WRCS is composed of three style servers The first, the Web servers maintain session control management with HTTP and TCP/IP protocols and TLS with SEED algorithm based on A/96, ACAP standard. Secondly, application servers support to work on real Java or HTML interactive applications according to broadcasting schedules. Thirdly, database servers work to storage mainly for offering the information of broadcast terminal, user, broadcast schedules, and so on. One of the distinguishing features of the WRCS is the developed technology provided by EJB platform for reusing.

A 3D model-based multi-camera monitoring system for panoramic video

Yongwoo Cho; Joo Myoung Seok; Doug Young Suh

This paper proposes multi-camera monitoring system that relies on 3D views for panoramic video. The proposed system monitors the projected 3D model view, instead of individual 2D views, to detect image distortions. This can minimize compensation errors caused by parallax, thereby improving the quality of the resulting panoramic video.

Personalized DMB bi-directional service system

Hee-Kyung Lee; Ji Hoon Choi; Joo Myoung Seok; Minsik Park; Han-Kyu Lee

As broadcasting and communications convergence is coming, DMB terminals have progressed to network-enabled (CDMA, WiBro, HSDPA, 4G, WLAN, and so on), and more storage and processing capability equipped devices. According to the progress, more rich and user-centric service with communication network and personalized consumption based on metadata and storage are requested . To fill the bill, this paper propose personalized DMB bidirectional contents and metadata server, especially using DMB AF and TV-Anytime metadata.
