New design for low-loss star couplers and arrayed waveguide grating devices

Joonoh Park; Youngchul Chung; Soohyun Baek; Hyung-Jong Lee

We propose a new loss reduction method in star couplers employing UV-written tapers that replace the free propagation region in the conventional star couplers and apply them to an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) device. The insertion loss of the new AWG device can be reduced to 0.31 dB, which is about 0.7 dB lower than that of the AWG without UV-written tapered waveguides.

Widely Tunable Coupled-Ring-Reflector Filter Based on Planar Polymer Waveguide

Joonoh Park; Taehyung Lee; Donghyun Lee; Suhyun Kim; Woonglin Hwang; Youngchul Chung

A widely tunable coupled-ring-reflector filter based on compact polymer waveguide is fabricated and the characteristics are measured. The ring radii of two rings are slightly different, which are 150 and 156 m, to achieve wide tuning of 43 nm using a low heating current as small as 37 mA.

Widely Tunable Double-Ring-Resonator Add/Drop Filter Using High-Index-Contrast Polymer Waveguide

Donghyun Lee; Taehyung Lee; Joonoh Park; Suhyun Kim; Woonglin Hwang; Youngchul Chung

A widely tunable add/drop filter composed of double ring resonators is implemented with high- index-contrast polymer waveguide. The drop response gets enhanced by more than 25% at the wavelength where both rings resonate, which makes this device suitable for wavelength selective component in realizing widely tunable hybrid laser diode.

Widely tunable laser hybrid-integrated with polymer coupled-ring reflector

Joonoh Park; Hyukjoon Lee; Taehyung Lee; K. Kim; W. Hwang; Young-uk Chung

A polymer-based coupled-ring reflector (CRR) is hybrid-integrated with R-SOA to realize a widely tunable laser diode. The wavelength tuning range is about 35 nm and SMSR is about 32 dB.

Design and Fabrication of Widely Tunable Polymer Waveguide Coupled-Ring Reflector

Taehyung Lee; Donghyun Lee; Joonoh Park; Woonglin Hwang; Youngchul Chung

A widely tunable coupled-ring reflector (CRR) based on planar polymer waveguide is fabricated and the characteristics are measured. The ring radii of the coupled rings are slightly different to achieve wide tuning of a few tens nm using a low current level as small as a few tens mA.
