Ethical Dilemmas in Teaching Ethical Issues in Aging.

Jordan I. Kosberg; Wiley P. Mangum

Discussed are dilemmas faced by instructors who teach a course on ethics and aging. Decisions need to be made as to whether the course should utilize scientific objectivity or advocacy, relative or absolute standards, a theoretical/ intellectual or applied/personal orientation, and an age‐specific or age‐irrelevant view. Recommendations are provided for educational gerontologists who teach such a course.

Book Review : George S. Getzel and M. Joanna Mellor (eds.), Gerontological Social Work Practice in the Community. New York: Haworth Press, 1985. 274 pp.

This collection of readings provides comprehensive information for those who are or will be working in the field of gerontology. After two introductory chapters on critical themes and a perspective, the book is divided into three sections. The first section, &dquo;Understanding the Domain of Gerontological Community Practice,&dquo; includes chapters on normative growth and development in aging, the aged and their families, protective services, and outreach. The second section, &dquo;Special Populations and Needs,&dquo; focuses on the elderly who are mentally retarded, mentally frail, undergoing mental stress, blind, alcoholic, or holocaust survivors. The final section, &dquo;Emerging Social Work Approaches and Sior center, with volunteers, using writing therapy, within a union setting, includes chapters on social work in a senand within housing for frail elderly. What impressed me about this book was its diversity. The topics covered provide a good overview of the range of settings within which social workers function with the aged as well as the range of problems facing older persons living in the community. While some readers might point out certain domains, special populations, approaches, or settings
