The Impact of Heritage Tourism on an Urban Economy: The Case of Granada and the Alhambra

Joaquín Murillo Viu; Javier Romaní Fernández; Jordi Suriñach i Caralt

The authors present an example of the impact of a cultural heritage site on its environment – in this case, the Alhambra and Generalife complex (AG) in Granada, Spain, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. They then quantify the impact and analyse the effects by sector, including a brief explanation of the methodology. The results show that tourism exercises strong push–pull effects through vigorous intersector relationships.

How to quantify and characterize day trippers at the local level: An application to the comarca of the Alt Penedès

Jordi Suriñach i Caralt; Josep Andreu Casanovas Pla; María Encarnación André; Joaquim Murillo Viu; Javier Romaní Fernández

This article presents a methodology for the operational definition, quantification and characterization of day trippers, for use at the local or regional levels. The methodology stresses the importance of such concepts as ‘daily urban systems’, ‘functional areas’, ‘travel-to-work areas’ and other similar aggregations to define what is one of the main features of tourism: ‘usual environment’. Different systems are developed for the quantification of day trippers, based on both primary (fieldwork) and secondary data, and we apply both to the case of a comarca in the Province of Barcelona (Catalonia). The results show the relevance of the phenomenon of ‘same-day trips’ (for tourism) and the interest for defining and characterizing this phenomenon correctly in order to implement tourism policies that address the different profiles presented by day trippers.

The effects of working with seasonally adjusted data when testing for unit root

Tomás del Barrio Castro; Ernest Pons Fanals; Jordi Suriñach i Caralt

Abstract This paper examines the performance of the ADF, PP and KPSS tests when using trend-cycle components obtained by signal extraction procedures as opposed to using the original series. It also seeks to determine the causes of the pernicious effects that are observed. The filtering procedures analysed in this paper are those of the ARIMA Model Based (AMB) and the Modified Airline Filter (MAF).

Promoting the development of the academic path through the National System of Researchers: A first attempt at evaluation

Gerardo Reyes Ruiz; Jordi Suriñach i Caralt; Alejandro Barragán Ocaña

Purpose – Mexico is an OECD member country that historically has allocated less than half a per cent of its gross domestic product to spend on research and experimental development. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the country’s science and technology policy through its main program, the National System of Researchers (SNI), an attempt made for the first time. The results obtained make it possible to see whether the SNI has succeeded in improving research in Mexico. The authors also look at whether the program provides ways of improving and strengthening the science policy model adopted by Mexico and whether it could be extended and/or introduced into other nearby countries with levels of development or characteristics similar to those of Mexico. Design/methodology/approach – After that, the authors will analyze the scientific productivity of SNI members in comparison to Mexican researchers as a whole so as to assess both whether the SNI selects the best researchers and whether these researchers c...
