Valores humanos como explicadores de atitudes ambientais e intenção de comportamento pró-ambiental

Jorge Artur Peçanha de Miranda Coelho; Valdiney V. Gouveia; Taciano L. Milfont

Human values have been pointed out as important predictors of environmental attitudes and pro-environmental behaviors. Although the literature supports the relationship between these three constructs, no information was found considering Brazilian samples. This study aimed to contribute to this gap. Participated in this study a number of 208 undergraduate students; most of them were from a private university (63.8%), female (73.4%) and with mean age of 28 years (SD = 7.0). They answered the Schwartz Values Survey and the Echocentric and Anthropocentric Attitudes Scale, an item to measure intention of pro-environment behaviors, and demographic questions. Results support previous studies. Specifically, self-transcendence values were the most important to explain pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors. These findings are discussed regarding the possibility of using human values in interventions to promote behaviors on behalf of the environment.

Teoria funcionalista dos valores humanos: aplicações para organizações

Valdiney V. Gouveia; Taciano L. Milfont; Ronald Fischer; Jorge Artur Peçanha de Miranda Coelho

This paper describes a functional theory of human values and links the theory to important organizational variables. The theory identifies two consensual value functions: values as guides of human actions, and values as expressions of human needs. The first function differentiates three types of value orientations (social, central, and personal), while the second function classifies values as either humanitarian or materialistic. A combination of these two functions yields six sub-functions of values (excitement, promotion, existence, suprapersonal, interactive, and normative). Three empirical studies are described that examines the influence of these sub-functions of values on the organizational commitment of employees in a private organization (Study 1), job-related affective well-being of public servants (Study 2), and fatigue and burnout of nurses, psychologists and physicians (Study 3). Results support the influence of values on these variables, and are discussed in light of the functional theory of values.

The purpose of the present research was to investigate the role of constructive thinking and the coping strategy of facing the expectation of job insertion, and their consequences regarding depression indicators in a non-clinical student population. Four hundred and thirteen students participated in this study: 35.7% of them were in the last year of high school and 24.4% were university students from the city of Areia (rural area), and 14.4% were in the last year of high school and 25.4% were university students from the city of Joao Pessoa (urban area). According to the results, students who use coping resources such as behavioral and emotional coping (constructive thinking dimensions) and direct coping (coping strategies dimension) are those ones who best face transition pressures from school/university to the workplace with lower levels of depression and better expectations of job insertion.

Prospects for the wind energy market have proposed changes of focus to managerial issues. The objective of this article is to map the specific market factors from Brazilian wind energy industry, in order to develop reflections and considerations on the subject, towards to the managerial, strategic and commercial development of the sector. Through an exploratory methodology in empirical format, and by a SWOT analysis of Telescopic Observations Strategic Framework, were found results that show funding and grants determined by Brazilian government, as the big question of the wind energy industry marketing, allowing the economic viability of wind energy projects. Further, it appears that the wind energy industry is eager to investments and has great potential for new business, but there are problems within the producing companies which that have to be assessed, such as the competitiveness capability, the high equipment costs, the installation locations limitations and lack of specialized employees with specific skills and capacities.

We hereby aim at comparing the beliefs and the existing expectations between small-settled growers and their neighbours, who either purchased or inherited small-properties, by taking into account that the settling process only gets completed when there is an effective integration between settlers and the community. Five-two settlers and 53 small-property owners took part in focus groups and individual interviews were carried out concerning the history of their community, expectations and so on. The results showed that settlers describes their neighbours as non-fighting-for-life disorganized people, while small-property owners see settlers as government-benefited land invaders. Both of them describe the social contact with the exogenous group as negative due to the existing prejudices on both sides. We are there led to conclude that although settling aims at integrating its members with the community, such target is not attained. This points to the need for an integrating policy- so as to contemplate a homogeneous

This article investigates the factor structure of the Stable Affective Relationships Scale (SAR; Reis, 1995). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of data from 658 Brazilian undergraduate students with average age 19.9 years old (SD=2.5), are reported. These analyses revealed five factors underlying the items on the SAR (Commitment, Construction, Mutuality, Involvement, and Indulgence) that are important in a stable affective relationship. All five factors presented good reliability (.68<α<.83), items with high (.46<λy <.75) and significant (p<.05) factor loadings. This five-factor structure had a better fit to the data (χ2/df=3.07; GFI=.91; CFI=.97; RMSEA=.056) and was statistically better fitting [Δχ2(111)=676.69, p<.001] than the unidimensional structure. The results also provided support for the validity of these new factors in exploring correlation with independent and interdependent self-construals (Singelis, 1994), basic human values (Gouveia, 2003) and gender differences.

Gender, systemizing style and cognitive maps: examining their links in the general population. This study examined the extent to which men and women differ regarding systemizing and construction of cognitive maps. Participants were 214 people (57% women) from Joao Pessoa (Brazil), with mean age of 29.3 years. They were asked to list the Brazilian Federation Unities (BFUs) and their capitals, to indicate in a sketch map the BFUs, to estimate the distances between capitals, and to answer the systemizing quotient test and demographic questions. Results showed that men and women differ with respect to the number of BFUs-capital correctly listed, and on the systemizing score, with men showing more right answers and being more systemizing than women. Men and women did not differ in locating the BFUs in the map, but men had more correct answers overall. In terms of distance estimation once again men showed better spatial representation than women. These findings indicate the influence of sex and systematizing on the representation of cognitive maps.

It is the purpose of the present study to evaluate the integration process between small farmers and the agrarian reformer settlers in a c ity that i s located in the region known as zona da mata (bushy zone) in the state of Paraiba. This evaluation was accomplished by surveying the popular beliefs among the groups. A series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with 232 individuals from 14 to 78 years of age, (M=28.31; DP=14.45), being 116 male and 116 female. It was verified that the socio-demographic variables (gender, marital status, and the origin of settlers) have not exerted any influence on the groups integration p rocess. The leading factor towards integration lays on the way the ce ntral government finances farming production, for, before the Pronaf, conflicting dialogues were seen to h ave occurred b etween settlers and their neighbors - the small farmers.
