Regiospecific Construction of Polyoxygenated 9,10-Anthraquinones. Total Synthesis of Islandicin and Digitopurpone

Andrew S. Kende; J. L. Belletire; J. L. Herrmann; R.F. Romanet; E. L. Hume; R. H. Schlessinger; Jose Fayos; Jon Clardy

Abstract Current interest3 in a practical synthesis of the antibiotic adriamycin4 1 prompts us to report some consequences of the photochemical5 versus the Friedel-Crafts6 approaches in the construction of unsymmetrical polyhydroxy-anthraquinones. These two complementary methods have now been exploited in the preparation of the natural coloring matters islandicin,7 2, and digitopurpone,8 3.

Synthesis and structure of chloro(methoxalyl)bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium

Jose Fayos; Edward D. Dobrzynski; Robert J. Angelici; Jon Clardy

Abstract Palladium(O) and platinum(O) phosphine complexes react with alkoxalyl chlorides (e.g., ClCOCO2CH3) to yield alkoxalyl complexes. The X-ray structure of one, transPd(Cl)(COCO2CH3)[P(C6H3)3]2, has been determined. Both the Pt and Pd complexes lose CO to give the corresponding alkoxycarbonyl complexes, M(Cl)(CO2CH3)[P(C6H5)3]2.
